MORI polled 2004 adults and found that 92 per cent trusted doctors to tell the truth. This was higher than for any other professional group, and the highest figure since such polls began in 1983. Next were teachers at 89 per cent, followed by professors at 80 per cent.
Competing for bottom place were journalists (20 per cent), politicians (22 per cent) and government ministers (23 per cent). Estate agents were not included, and television news readers scored only 70 per cent. Of concern to Christian Herald readers, only 75 per cent of the public expect the clergy to tell the truth - 17 per cent thought they would not tell the truth and 8 per cent didn't know.
Other findings from the poll were that 87 per cent believed doctors were hard-working, 85 per cent that they were committed, and 83 per cent that they were helpful.
In a separate BMA poll in March, 60 per cent of doctors answered no to the question: Do you believe there will be a recognisable National Health Service in 50 years.

Around 30 per cent of children and young adults are affected by an allergy and that number is set to rise. Half of that number have a severe allergy that affects their daily lives. In the past 20 years, the number of people with confirmed allergies has jumped fourfold. Cases of eczema and asthma have doubled over the same period. Four out of ten school children have at least one allergy, and experts predict that one in three adults will develop an allergy in some time during their lives.
While 80 per cent of us get the vacuum out at least once a week, research by Morphy Richards shows that poor cleaning routines in many homes create ideal breeding conditions for dust mites. A suprising 44 per cent of homes never vacuum their bed mattresses or upholstery, and 37 per cent of duvets have never been laundered.

Major factors that favour the household dust mites:
10 per cent of people vacuum their house less than once a month.
32 per cent of homes no longer get a spring clean.
40 per cent of people don't clean carpets or floors when moving into a new home.
61 per cent of homeowners don't shampoo or steam clean carpets.

Storytelling is a dying art - a recent survey by Fox's CUBS has discovered that almost one third of parents with children up to the age of 10 rarely or never read their children a story! Amazingly, only nine per cent of Scottish parents read to their children every day, whereas in the Midlands, 47 per cent of those questioned tell a story every day.
When it comes to the most important ingredient of a story, 41 per cent of males surveyed thought excitement came out tops (30 per cent of females) and 27 per cent of females thought fantasy was necessary (only nine per cent of males).

Since the late 1950s, the earth's average surface temperature has increased by 0.6C and snow cover and ice extent have diminished. During the past century, the sea level has risen, on average, by 10-20cm - and the temperature of the oceans has increased. Mid-range estimates for future climate change are 1-3C global mean warming, and a rise in the sea level of 45cm by 2100.
It is anticipated that the equivalent of the UK heatwave in the summer of 1976 - which occurs once every 310 years under the current climate - may occur every five to six years by 2050.
The heatwave in July-August 1995 in London was associated with a 16 per cent increase in mortality.
