A bid to source half of all milk packaging from recycled materials by 2020 is one of a series of goals unveiled today to make the dairy industry greener. The Milk Roadmap, launched by the industry and the Environment Department (Defra), also outlines plans to cut green – house gas emissions from dairy farms by 20 – 30 per cent by 2020. Defra said the roadmap aimed to address the environmental consequences of producing liquid milk through the supply chain from farms to retailers. Milk and meat production account for around seven per cent of UK greenhouse gas emissions.

England is set to become the most crowded country in Europe as its population grows by over a third in the next 50 years, according to projections. There are currently some 50 million people in England, but by 2056 this could hit 68 million – 1,349 for every square mile. The population density now is around 1,010. Plans to lower the age of consent in Northern Ireland are opposed by 73% of the population, a new poll shows. The survery was conducted by polling company ComRes on behalf of The Christian Insitute. The Northern Ireland Office is proposing to lower the age of conset from 17 to 16 in the province. Last month, assembly members approved a committee report which recommended keeping the law unchanged.The rate of STIs among under-16s is 2.5 times higher in England and Wales, where the age of consent is 16, compared to Northern Ireland.

More women including an alarming number of teenage girls, are having repeated abortions, the Government has admitted. Among under-18s nearly 1400 abortions were performed on girls who had already had one or two abortions. 18,619 pregnancies were terminated in total among under-18s in 2006. Of the 200,00 abortions that took place in 2006, 32% were performed on women who had already had at least one other pregnancy terminated, raising fears that some women use abortion as a form of contreception.
