| More than a quarter of young people have been so depressed that they considered killing themselves, according to a mental health charity. In a survey by the Depression Alliance, which runs April's National Depression Week, 28% of young people aged 10-18 said they'd 'had thoughts' about suicide, while 24% knew someone who had tried to take their own life, 18% knew someone who had succeeded in doing so. Government estimates suggest that around 1 in 5 young people will require support or treatment for depression at some point during their teenage years. |

In 1997 5% of year 7 boys were smoking regularly, compared with 3% of girls. By year 8, the trend had reversed, with around 9% of boys and 12% of girls smoking. By year 10, around 24% of boys and 37% of girls were addicted to the habit.
In 1982, 26% of males aged 15-16 were regular smokers, compared to 28% of girls. In 2001, those figures had fallen to 19% and 25% respectively.
More English 15 year-old girls smoke than in almost any other country in the world. Only the 15 year-old girls of Greenland smoke more.
19% of 15-year-old boys told a survey that they smoked regularly, with 10% calling themselves 'occasional' smokers, and 59% saying they'd never smoked more than once. |
