Reviewed by Andrew Wallace After more than two decades on the Christian music scene, Georgia-based veteran rockers Third Day return with 'Revival'. Recorded live at the legendary Muscle Shoals Studios, Alabama, this is a fresh, vibrant, potent mix of all the trademark Third Day signature sounds and styles ranging from blistering Southern rock and polished power ballads to soft, acoustic worship. A soulful, old-school, gospel groove throughout gives things a timeless, classic feel. Lead single and opener "Revival", with its funky, rootsy, folky vibe, starts proceedings off in swinging, old-camp meeting style as lead Mac Powell pours out his heart for God to move. "Leave This World Behind" is the hardest cut here, its wailing guitar intro recalling the band's rockier roots - no surprise as the band link up again with Monroe Jones, producer of some of their earlier landmark releases ('Time', 'Conspiracy No. 5'). "Let There Be Light" is a typical Third Day power ballad, a polished diamond clearly destined for airplay. The lyrics are joyous, hopeful and celebratory - the ice-cool "Gather Round Now" showcasing Powell's fine, versatile, gritty baritone as he testifies to the goodness of God over a backdrop of hard, crunching guitar riffs. An additional five cuts make this deluxe edition excellent value. A gem of an album from a band still at the top of their game.
