Does anyone out there remember the great Hymns v Choruses argument that sped fiercely across our country? New music threatened to railroad out this nation's historical legacy, and all that.. Well, I hope it's all run out of steam now we've realised there's plenty of room for both. And room there is for this worthy collection of classics from a bygone age. 19 of these are vintage and build up speed, from "O For A Thousand Tongues", right through to "'Now Thank We All Our God" via "Low In The Grave" and "For All The Saints". The only unfortunate detour is the durge-like "In Heavenly Love Abiding", a real cul-de-sac of a track! This siding apart, though, the Scottish Festival Singers, conducted by Ian McCrorie are splendid and this excellent mix certainly reaches its destination. All aboard, hymn lovers!
