In the mid to late '90s, America's Dr Onionskin made a couple of groundbreaking albums and was probably the first Christian acid jazz artist. But he has always stayed rather eclectic and experimental, which this time has unfortunately produced something a bit less palatable. The rhythms are kept just a bit too stark, with minimal use of riffs and melodies. Instead there are electronic bleeps and crashes and dated vocal samples the type of which already became over-used 10 years ago. "Bust It" is another dated effort, in the hardcore trance style which Prophecy Of Panic and Prodigal Sons were championing a decade previously. "Crenshaw Blvd" is more like the acid jazz Dr Onionskin of old, but that's just four minutes out of over 60. So it's a rather confusing release: supposedly being futuristic while copying so many ideas from the past. Is this the future of electro? I hope not.
