People who drink more than seven cups of instant coffee a day have an increased tendency to hallucinate. High caffeine users were three times more likely to have heard a non-existent person’s voice than “low” users who consumed less than one cup of instant coffee or its equivalent, scientists found. Besides coffee, caffeine can be obtained from sources such as tea, chocolate and energy drinks.

Knife crime could continue to rise until 2018, one of Britain’s leading trauma surgeons warned. Professor Karim Brohi, consultant trauma and vascular surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, said that urgent action and school education was needed if stabbing injuries were to be reduced. He said: “Without long-term intervention I think we’ll continue to see an increase in knife crime up to 2018.”

An investigation was launched after two immigration staff were revealed to be members of the British National Party (BNP), the UK Border Agency said. The two staff worked in an immigration removal centre until a list of BNP members appeared on the internet in November, according to a UK Border Agency spokesman. After the list was made public, one resigned and another was suspended, he said.

Bus companies in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire are working with regeneration leaders to install the devices in the next two years. Rail passengers will today have to fork out for fare rises well above the inflation level, with some tickets going up by more than 11 per cent. Customers watchdog Passengers Focus said rail travellers would “shudder and shiver” when they saw the new fares. But the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) said some fares were staying the same or going down and commuting by rail was “considerably less expensive than commuting by car”.

A Briton injured in the New Year’s Eve nightclub fire in Thailand said today he had been rescued by the “hand of an angel”. Alex Wargacki, aged 29, from London, was speaking as he recovered from the fire in Bangkok which claimed the lives of at least 61 partygoers and injured 200 more. Mr Wargacki was pulled from the burning club by an unknown rescuer after collapsing as he tried to escape.

Asda will offer discounts on 1,000 products from today in a move likely to ignite a “credit crunch” price war between the supermarket giants. Asda said there would be price cuts on 1,000 essential items in its 350 stores. A spokewoman for supermarket giant Tesco, responding to the Asda announcement, said: “We have already dropped our prices on thousands of everyday lines and we have more to come.”

Extended help for homeowners struggling to pay mortgages after losing their jobs was introduced by the Government today to slow spiralling repossessions. Thousands more will get help with intrest paymrnts after the threshold for qualification was raised and the waiting period cut to 13 days. People with mortgages of up to £200,000 – double the previous cut off – will now qualify for Support for Mortgage Intrest.

House prices fell by 15.9 per cent during 2008, the biggest annual drop on record, figures showed today. The average cost of a UK home dropped by a further 2.5 per cent in December. Nationwide warned that prices were likely to have further to fall before significant numbers of buyers returned to the market.
