A bus advertisement saying ‘There is a God’ has drawn the fourth highest number of complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority. The Christian Party advert counters one by the British Humanist Association saying: ‘There is probably no God’. Despite 1.045 complaints, ten times as many as for the humanist advert, the ASA said the poster was electioneering and outside its control. (The Times)

Women who have just one alcoholic drink each day are increasing their risk of cancer, according to a new study. Consuming just one drink a day causes an extra 7,000 cancer cases in women in the UK each year, researchers found. Around 5,000 of these cases are related to breast cancer but others are cancers of the rectum, liver, mouth and throat.

Calls have been made for frontline ambulance staff to be issued with body armour. Figures released under Freedom of Information legislation uncovered almost 7,500 addresses where ambulance staff require a police escort or are advised to exercise caution because of the potential for violence. The highest number of addresses was reported by the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust – covering Cheshire.

A drug targeting genetic flaws in blood cancer cells was launched in the UK today, the first medicine to treat the cause of the disease. Vidaza, generic name azacitidine, can be used to treat sufferers of high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) or acute myeloid leukaemia. It targets genetic faults in the cells which cause the cancer, and can help the body to produce healthy blood cells.

Government plans to improve the numeracy and literacy skills of a million adults were published today. More than £1 billion of government funding is being invested over the next year in improving adults’ basic skills to help them get and keep jobs.

David Johnson head of Essex fire service, said crews were called to help paramedics move obese people 86 times in 2008. He said the problem Indicated a “wider” social issue and highlighted the “broadening” of the fire service’s role.

The Government’s Chief Medical Officer said yesterday he would push forward with the proposals for a minimum price on alcohol despite Gordon Brown rejecting the idea. Sir Liam Donaldson said the UK had a drinking problem. He recommended a minimum price of 50p per unit of alcohol is introduced to cut consumption and associated risks.

The recession will be longer lasting in Britain than in any other major economy, according to the International Monetary Fund(IMF). An analysis predicts that the UK will be among the worst hit this year. It suggests that the global economy will shrink by 0.6 per cent in 2009, compared with 3.8 per cent in Britain.

Almost one in three service families are unhappy with the housing provided by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the National Audit Office said today. It claimed it will take 20 years to get all army housing stock up to standard. More than 9,000 properties out of MoD’s stock of 50,000 homes are standing empty - many because they are in the wrong location or are too small for a family.

The global economy is on track to shrink by up to one per cent this year in the first worldwide con traction for 60 years, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned. In a gloomy report to the G20 countries, the IMF made a severe downgrade to previous predictions, forecasting global activity to decline by around half a per cent to one per cent this year. It said advanced economies would see their sharpest declines in the post-war era.
