A new report claims that sexism is so widespread that it affects ‘most aspects’ of girls’ and young women’s lives. New research from YouGov reveals that when it comes to wedding traditions, both men and women in Britain want to keep things as they are. Even traditions with medieval connotations (the father giving away the bride to the husband) are still very popular. Some 66% of men and 58% of women support the tradition of the bride taking the husband’s surname. The most popular tradition is the groom having a best man: 88% of British adults want to see this preserved. When it comes to the practice of the bride’s family paying for the wedding, 75% say they oppose it. Also largely opposed is the vow of promising to obey the husband, though women oppose this far more than men, by 81% to 59%.

A way of editing the genetic code one letter at a time has been developed that could help scientists conquer diseases caused by tiny glitches in DNA. The process allows single letter mutations not only to be introduced to cells, but accurately identified. Using the techniques, researchers were able to spot one mutant in a sample of 1,000 cells. The research raises the prospect of accurately modelling human diseases in the laboratory, as well as finding cures that fix specific disease mutations.

Facebook has rejected all calls to ban pages and videos linked to a ‘neknomination’ drinking craze despite one death in Ireland being linked to the online dare. Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte demanded the social networking giant act as a raft of interest groups including health chiefs and psychiatrists called for the phenomenon to be stopped. Jonny Byrne, 19, from Carlow, in the Irish Republic, drowned after taking part in the stunt which sees people being challenged to post a video online of them downing drinks, then nominating others to do the same inside 24 hours. Facebook has not moved to delete or block any material as the videos do not break its rules on harmful content, such as organising violence or bullying.

The union said this would impact on patient safety and is calling for a 30-minute meal break every six hours. Unite said Saturday's strike was well supported.

A move towards nine-hour school days and longer terms could leave many children exhausted and too tired to learn, it has been claimed. Under plans reportedly being examined by the Conservatives, school hours would be extended, with pupils staying until around 6pm, while school holidays would be cut almost in half, to around seven weeks a year. But teachers’ leaders warned many children are already tired at the end of the school day, and need regular breaks to help them process what they have learnt.

The Prime Minister said the existing £2,000 cap would continue to apply and he also promised to veto proposals to increase the overall pay bill. The average cost of childcare has leapt by 19 per cent in the past year, holding back parents from going to work, according to a study. Research by childcare search site Findababysitter.com showed that one-in-four unemployed parents wanted to work but could not because of high childcare costs. The average hourly rate for hiring help such as a nanny, housekeeper or babysitter jumped from £8.10 an hour to £9.80 over the past year, it suggested. A survey of over 1,000 parents for the study found that around half believed the Government was not doing enough to support them with childcare costs.

Predictions that half the British population will be obese by 2050 “underestimate” the scale of the obesity crisis, a report suggests. The UK is in danger of surpassing predictions of a 2007 report which estimated that 50 per cent of the nation would be obese by 2050, the National Obesity Forum said. The “doomsday scenario” set out in the report does not cover the true extent of the problem it said. The forum’s latest report calls on health officials to introduce hard-hitting awareness campaigns - similar to those for smoking – to try to stem the problem. The organisation also called on family doctors to proactively discuss weight management with patients.
