A ‘substantial’ number of eastern European migrants arriving in Britain in the last decade were not counted. Net migration in the UK between 2001 and 2011 was 346,000 higher than previously thought as a result of ‘inadequate sampling’ of arrivals into the country, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. Arrivals were not counted in part because an official survey focused on major airports, such as London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester, while migrants were using an increasing number of regional routes into the country.

Thousands of people across the region could be putting themselves at risk of potentially life threatening illness through failure to recognise they are obese. More than 3,100 people in the West Midlands were surveyed on the issue by healthcare experts Nuffield Health. More than half – 59 percent – of those questioned said they considered themselves to be merely over weight while just 5 percent perceived themselves as obese. But following tests much more of them – 13 per cent – were measured as obese. Despite awareness campaigns, the research also showed a significant lack of understanding among the population about obesity health risks.

A respected international think-tank has upgraded its growth forecast for the UK to 3.2% this year – but warned that action may be needed to cool the housing market. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) revised its estimate from 2.4%, saying it believed the recovery has now ‘taken hold’. But it cautioned that consumer spending remained the main driver of growth, and urged the Government to consider measures to ensure ‘balanced’ house price rises.

Interest rates have been kept at their historic low of 0.5 per cent as mounting pressure to cool the housing market failed to persuade the Bank of England to change course. The announcement was widely expected as policymakers have said they would rather utilise other tools to curb any property bubble before acting on rates, which would only be deployed as a ‘last line of defence’. The decision came as latest figures from the Halifax showing a second consecutive month-on-month fall in house prices in April – though they were 8.5 per cent year-on-year – looked likely the ease concerns about an overheating market. The Bank rate has been at the historic low of 0.5 per cent for more than five years to nurse the economy back to health. With the recovery gathering pace, policymakers have made clear they want to see more of the ‘spare capacity’ in the economy taken up before any hike, leading to expectations of a first rise next spring.

Government officials have ordered Stoke-on-Trent City Council to check that lamb curries and kebabs being sold by takeaways don’t contain any other meat. It comes after the Foods Standards Agency (FSA) found that 43 out of 145 samples of lamb takeaways in London and Birmingham were wrongly described. The FSA said 25 were found to contain only beef, which is cheaper than lamb, while chicken and turkey were discovered in the other samples. Now local authorities across the country are being asked to test 300 samples of lamb from takeaways in their area, starting next month. The crackdown comes after one city takeaway was shut down after experts discovered one of their lamb curries was, in fact, beef.
