A poll of more than 1,000 parents conducted for the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, found that fewer than a third of parents even look at league tables when choosing schools for their children. Instead, more than half (54 per cent) look online for general information, 49 per cent read the latest inspection report, and 53 per cent speak to parents of current pupils.

A record number of people killed themselves in prisons in England and Wales in 2016, figures show. There were 354 deaths behind bars in England and Wales last year, including 119 which were apparently self-inflicted. Self-harm incidents jumped by nearly a quarter, while there were more than 25,000 assaults in the 12 months to September – equivalent to nearly 70 attacks every day. Officers are also facing a rising torrent of violence, with the number of assaults on staff rising by two fifths.

Figures from Public Heath England in 2015/16 show that 19.98 per cent of Year 6 children, aged 10 to 11, are obese, with a further 14.3 per cent overweight. Results in 2015 showed that 28.2 per cent of children aged two to 15 were classed as overweight or obese.

The number of would-be students applying to university has dropped for just the third time in 15 years. Figures show that around 30,000 fewer people had applied to start degree courses this autumn by January 15 – the main deadline of submitting applications. A breakdown reveals that, in the wake of Brexit, the number of EU students planning to study at a UK university has dropped by around seven per cent.

Our analysis of data from the Family Resources Survey between 1994 and 2012 shows an alarming widening of ‘the marriage gap’ between the rich and poor. Mothers with young children are four times more likely to be married if they are wealthy than if they are poor. Among wealthier mothers with children under five, 87 per cent are married compared to only 24 per cent of the poorest earners. The position among the middle income families is not dissimilar. In 1994, 84 per cent were married. By 2012 that figure had dropped to 59 per cent.

Between 2009-10 and 2015-16, the number of ambulance calls and NHS 111 transfers increased from 7.9 million to 10.7 million, a year-on-year increase of 5.2 per cent. There has been a 29 per cent decrease in divorces granted to couples in the first five years of marriage. For couples who have been married for more than ten years, the divorce rate has not changed significantly since the 1960s. After ten years of marriage the divorce rate is 1.8 per cent and this decreases year by year after that.
