Students at a British university have been told they will be marked down in essays unless they use gender-neutral pronouns. Undergraduates in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Hull have been told that if they do not use "gender-sensitive" language, it will have an "impact on their mark". While other universities already advise students to use 'gender-neutral' language, Hull is the first to penalise students for not doing this.

While MPs are overwhelmingly in support of the UK retaining its nuclear deterrent, opinion polls appear to suggest that the British public is more divided on the issue. A poll in January showed that a narrow majority – 51 per cent – of people agreed with the Governments proposal to fully renew Trident. Just under three out of 10 people supported Mr Corbyn’s plan to keep the submarines – thereby protecting jobs – but sending them on patrol without warheads, while a further 20 per cent opposed any Trident renewal.

Long delays to cancer treatment are causing people to suffer anxiety and depression, a charity has warned. A survey of more than 1,000 people recently diagnosed with cancer chows nearly two thirds (63 per cent) experienced mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, while waiting for their treatment to start. Macmillan Cancer Support, which carried out the poll across England, said this could equate to around 190,000 people a year.

Pakistan’s National Assembly passed a law on 6 February which amended some criminal laws, making it possible for sectarianism, mass lynching and forced conversations to be punished more vigorously. The Bill’s statement of objectives and reasons state that ‘terrorism, sectarianism and extremism have gripped the entire country and these acts have become the order of the day’.

NHS staff will be encouraged to ask dying patients about their ‘religious preferences’ under new guidance for the NHS, it was reported in early March. Staff have been called to do more to ensure that the preferences of patients are addressed after an audit of deaths in England revealed that the spiritual preferences of patients who could be communicated with before dying were rarely recorded. The approach has been praised by the National Council for Palliative Care.

Christians must feel free to talk about their beliefs, the Prime Minister said in early March, as she declared that the role of Christianity should be celebrated in the UK. Theresa May also told a Downing Street reception that the persecution of Christians abroad needs to be tackled. At the end of February, a judge stated that quoting the words of the Bible should be considered to be abusive and is a criminal matter. This came about during the trial of two street preachers – Mike Overd and Michael Stockwell – who were convicted of a public order offense in Bristol.

Legislation to ‘criminalise emotional abuse’ of children is set to be introduced in Scotland, despite concerns about a previous attempt to bring in a similar law in England and Wales, it was reported early March. Such a law could see parents criminalised for raising their children according to their religious beliefs.

A study published in the Journal Cell on 23 March 2017 reveals that the nervous system of embryos and fetuses may be greatly more developed than was previously believed. Entitled "Tridimensional Visualization and Analysis of Early Human Development" the study shows that unborn babies in the first trimester have "adult-like" patterns of nerves.
