| Almost six out of ten people in England say they are Christian, according to a new poll of carried out by ComRes. But only two in five believe that Jesus was a real person, showing a high degree of Biblical illiteracy. And just nine per cent of those identifying as Christian pray regularly, read the Bible and attend church at least monthly. | |

| Just 19 per cent of Americans believe they live in a Christian nation with over two thirds calling America a ‘nation of many religions’. The poll by Lifeway Research also found that most Americans believe the US is still far more welcoming to Christians than Muslims. Over 90 per cent said Christians are welcomed, whilst just 57 per cent said the same for Muslims. | |

| Amity Printing Press, based in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China, is the world’s largest printer of Bibles, it was reported in late April. Qiu Zhonghui, president of the company said: ‘In 2012 we celebrated production of the 100 millionth copy. It took 20 years to print the first 50 million copies, but the second 50 million took just five years.’ | |

| The number of Christians in the USA is declining according to the Pew Research Centre. In 2007, 78.4% of US adults identified with Christian groups. That percentage has now fallen to 70.6%. Pew’s Religious Landscape Study also found that the number of Americans with no religious affliction has risen from 16.1% in 2007 to 22.8% today. | |

| UK faith groups give over £3bn a year in time to social action projects, according to the Cinnamon Network’s recent Faith Action Audit. The network says faith groups are ‘uniquely positioned to support those in most need on multiple levels’. Faith groups were praised in the report for their debt advice, coaching people back into work, offering emergency food parcels and providing safe places to build friendship. | |

| A summary published last month collating various surveys suggests that 29% of British Muslims would prefer to live in this country under Sharia law rather than British law. Nearly a third (31%) agree that Muslim conversion to another religion is "forbidden and punishable by death" and 17% believe it is appropriate that Muslims who convert to other religions are cut off by their families, according to the research. Up to 20% say there is a clash between Islam and British values. | |

| The number of women becoming nuns in the UK has reached a 25-year high. Figures from the Catholic Church show the number of women taking their holy vows has trebled in the past five years. The Church says women are being drawn to religious life because of a ‘gap in the market for meaning in our culture’. | |

| Christianity will lose its place as the majority religion in Britain by 2050 according to Pew Research Center. Christianity currently has more members in the UK than any other religion or atheism combined. But Pew’s The Future of World Religions report says by 2050 Christianity will go in to the minority with just 45% identifying themselves as Christians. The report says that the average Muslim’s fertility rate is 3.1 children per woman. The Christian rate is 2.7. The Pew research also shows that atheists, agnostics and other people who do not affiliate with any religion will make up a declining share of the world’s total population. Nevertheless, a recent WIN/Gallup poll also shown that only 30% of Brits describe themselves as religious. | |

| Statistics suggest that a quarter of young people in the UK have no strong religions persuasion. The phrase ‘NONES’ has been coined in recent years to describe this group, a group marked by a general sense of apathy towards all thing religious, faith and God. | |

| Research conducted by ‘Dying Matters’ has found that most of the British public would not consider it a top priority to have their spiritual needs catered for when facing the end of their lives. In a poll, commissioned by ComRes, participants were asked to consider which factor from a list of six would be the most important to them in ensuring that they had a 'good death.' Having religious and spiritual needs met ranked at the bottom, with only 5 per cent describing this as a top priority. | |

| The Archbishop of Canterbury has said that faith leaders seem desperate to hide behind ‘bland’ and ‘anaemic’ statements about what they have in common rather than facing up to the ‘profound differences’ between them. He also warned that the pretence that mainstream religions agree on everything is simply ‘dishonest’ and risks leaving them impotent to halt the spread of extremism. | |

| Christianity will remain the world’s largest religion in 2050 but only just, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center. The US think tank forecasts that Islam will grow rapidly over the next 35 years, taking the number of Muslims to 2.8 billion by the century's mid-point compared to 2.9 billion Christians. By then, the UK will no longer have a majority identifying as Christian and 10% of Europe's population could be Muslim, the study claims. | |

| Hospitals may have to provide atheist chaplains, according to new NHS guidelines published last week. The guidance uses the term ‘chaplain’ to refer to “non-religious pastoral and spiritual care providers”, and claims that patients’ experiences are “enhanced by ensuring either religious or non-religious pastoral support is available”. | |

| The results of the largest ever consultation by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) have revealed widespread discrimination against Christians. Of the nearly 2,500 responses, Christians comprised by far the highest number (1,030), followed by atheists at just 188. | |
