It was later found in the churchman’s coffin after his body had been moved to Durham Cathedral. Since 1979, the book has been on long-term loan to the British Library, where it is on display. Last year, the British Library was given first option to acquire it. The British Library is in the process of raising £9 million for the book by next march.

Leaders of non-Christian faith groups should be invited to sit alongside bishops in the House of Lords, an historian who contributed to a commission on reform of the second chamber has suggested. Sacrificing the Bible’s place in society will cause moral decay, the Bishop of London has warned. Speaking at a symposium on the Bible in the House of Lords this week, the Right Reverend Richard Chartres said that “culture and civilisation” were founded on scripture. “The economy and politics must have ground beneath them,” he said. “In Britain that ground has been biblical since our earliest days – and you do not sacrifice that without sacrificing much of what has been built upon that ground.” He went on to say that “concepts of dignity and tolerance” will be very difficult to sustain without a solid Christian grounding.

Church leaders are concerned that dioceses could be sued for thousands of pounds if parishes refuse to allow gay groups to use their halls. Their fears have been sparked by legal advice given to a diocese in England and Wales that a refusal would amount to discrimination under the equality act, which came into effect last October. This could lead to legal action and the prospect of having to pay damages of between £600 and £30,000 plus legal costs were they to lose a case.

Regarding Baroness Warsi’s comments on prejudice towards Muslims in the UK, the former Bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, in January stated that diversity in the UK needs to be based on traditional Christian values. He said, ‘I know from personal experience that extremism as a mindset is spreading throughout the Muslim world. We do not want it to spread here through the teaching of hate and the radicalisation of the young. That is why we must distinguish between those Muslims who want to live peacefully with their non-Muslim neighbours and those who wish to introduce shari’a into this country, restrict freedom of speech and confine women to their homes, not to speak of introducing draconian punishments such as death for blasphemy recently awarded to a poor Christian woman in Pakistan. ‘If relations are to improve between Muslims and other people in the world, these are the kind of issues that must be tackled.’
