The Rock Music is an independent movement of collaborating musicians based in Salt Lake City, Utah, who are dedicated to writing, recording and performing relevant, Christ-centred music. Part of that collective is The Porter Family Band who have produced this six-song EP. Listeners of a certain age and certain denominational background will find five of the hymns as familiar as the sixth "Amazing Grace" is to everyone. Musically this is like walking into a tent crusade of the last century. Bluegrass, folksy, acoustic instrumentation support the simple melody line and country style harmonies to supply a pleasing singalong sound that would prepare a congregation for the main act of the evening, the evangelist. These are well played, nicely sung versions of hymns like "All Creatures Of Our God And King" and "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms". Another very well-known hymn is "Blessed Assurance" and this hymn does receive a substantial, clever makeover. The tempo is slowed right down, the heavy Southern American accents of the other songs are muted to an almost English choral vocal running peacefully above a picked acoustic guitar and restrained banjo with a male voice coming in, gentle and harmonious, in support of the lead. In its totality this album is probably of limited general appeal providing comfortable listening and a warm glow inside for those who recall a bygone era of worship.
