There is only one problem with this CD - its production. Unfortunately, it's a HUGE problem. It's really sad to say because I think that some of the songs in themselves are fine, and I'm sure that God inspires Skegness, Lincolnshire-based Steve in his honest writing and worship. His explanations of the songs in the inlay helpfully expand their concepts. But the arrangements and recordings are so frustratingly messy that they have no chance to shine. The whole disc is doused in treble - electric guitars are tinny, microphones pop and vocals (particularly harmonies) are often out of tune. Instruments clash and have been laid over out of time, while the midi drum kit is a distraction. Most effective are the acoustic numbers, simply because they're not marred by attempts at complicating the whole process with multi-tracking. Of the 10 tracks "Gethsemane" stands out, but really, Steve needs to polish up these song lyrics, find musicians who can add real depth to his music and most importantly, invest some money in having a competent engineer/producer to guide him.

I saw Steve Lowndes in concert while he was in the Chicago
area this past May, 2006. I was amazed by his talent and
song writing skills. And was moved beyond words!
As for Design for Life, I have a copy and have been enjoying
it over the past summer. I have tons of cd's, and it
seems to have landed in my top 5 despite Ewan's review.
To me, Ewan's review was insensitive and a bit harsh. But
that my personal opinion... whatever it's worth.
