The musical history of the Archer family goes back a mighty long way, back to the 70s when Steve and his numerous siblings started recording together. By the end of the 80s it was just Steve, Tim and Janice, who made some good music rather like an earlier version of Avalon, but as far as I know Steve is the only one doing any recording these days. For this offering, erstwhile West Coast rocker Tim Miner appears as producer, songwriter and instrumentalist, but anyone expecting chunky rock or in-your-face beats will be disappointed. This is routine pop veering towards easy listening, with a slight R&B tinge in Steve's phrasing and only the occasional excursion into slightly more radical territory. Two such are "You'll Never Leave Me" and "Show Some Love", both of which bounce along quite merrily, but the rest of it isn't that exciting. Advancing age shouldn't mean the musical equivalent of comfy slippers and a rocking chair by the fire, so I hope Steve can bring himself to get a tad more adventurous next time.
