Combining the passion of gospel music with the musical roots of African vocal music, the Soweto Gospel Choir present a new release of songs in English and a variety of native tribal languages. Most have musical backing but there are plenty here that work a cappella or with minimal instrumentation, so compelling is the vocal work of the choir. The opening "Seteng Sediba" sets the tone in fine fashion whilst "Ke Na Le Modisa" is another example of the way in which simple rhythms and vocals work together. It's the range of material that is astonishing from the very pleasant medley of spirituals to the fairly straightforward choice of "By The Rivers Of Babylon" which is given the unique SGC treatment. One of the many highlights is the performance of "One" backing U2's Bono at a tribute concert to Nelson Mandela. Another highlight is Rebecca Sidumo's vocal and the choir's support on the cover of Dylan's "Forever Young" is exquisite. It's impossible not to get captivated by the sheer power of the performances here and the sheer joy of the album. No wonder the choir picked up a Grammy at last year's ceremony.
