This brought back memories of the mid-‘80s soul sounds of Jam & Lewis, the SOS Band and Alexander O’Neal. Those were the years! American three-piece Soulfruit (who appear to have recruited heavyweight boxing legend Lennox Lewis, if the sleeve photos are to be believed) hail from Tucson, Arizona, and have been doing their thang – baby – for going on 10 years now. The music will leave as much of an impression on the discerning soul fan as the aforementioned pugilist Mr Lewis does on his opponents. Although the album is in general ballad-heavy, these are classy ballads with an unmistakeable message (check out “Green Grass”) and there are some up-tempo moments to savour, such as “Hands Up”, opener “Ooo!” and “Radio”.
