When fully active, this Gothic metal outfit were never far from controversy. Lyrical content and a dramatic stage image ensured tension in conservative circles. This 20th Anniversary package, released in 2010, serves to remind of some of the qualities these American hard music exponents brought to the table. All 11 tracks centre on Eric Clayton's haunting, but distinctive, vocal delivery. Comparisons with David Bowie are difficult to avoid, but at the same time there is an operatic quality to his voice. A dark, moody vibe pervades the solid riffing that drives through some lengthy tracks. "The Revelation" comes in at over 20 minutes with others in the territory of epics. Demo quality is evident, but this latest remix does add crispness to the music. Weaknesses are most noticed in the arrangement of tracks such as "The Church Of The Vatican Slaves" which calls out for the soaring lead guitar work that only arrives in the last minute. Having said this there are many glimpses of the skills that caused this band to be critically acclaimed by the mainstream press. "Streams" rumbles with waves of energy and an early Bride feel while "Ludicrous Smiles" echoes a catchy refrain over some evocative, swirling guitars. Whilst certainly sombre in tone, this early collection deserves note as an experimental melting pot of influences.
