Anybody seeing the name Phil Driscoll and expecting an album of gravel-voiced pop gospel or some of those exercises in inspirational trumpet pyrotechnics so beloved by Phil's large US following will be slightly taken aback by this album. With the London National Philharmonic Orchestra supplying orchestration this fine musician does instrumental only renditions of hymns, sometimes staying within a classical trumpet context ("The Master Has Come") and on other occasions veering into closer to MOR with Kurt Kaiser and Jerry Cleveland doing the bulk of the arrangements. Despite the talent of everyone concerned, and the large recording budget, it often sounds stilted and creatively moribund.
