Eclectism rules on this album by a Cambridge-based musician. Opening track "Square One" kicks in with an urgency that could only be reproduced if The Jam and The Ramones were locked in a room with Focus. However, the punk rock gives way to lounge/acid jazz for "Trail Of Devastation". "Into The Burnout" and "Losing Streaker" are all '80s synth and layered guitar harmonies. "Call You Son" delves into some truly experimental chords and arrangements, but that does not always result in the song being particularly fun to listen to. Cole's lyrics are original but sometimes a little awkward, while arrangements are imaginative and clever, if not slightly pretentious at times. The musicianship is superb although I hope that this release leads to Cole being able to record in a more professional capacity. The big drawback is Cole's voice which often seems strained and only really works on the indie-rock numbers. The ballads and epic songs would benefit from a much stronger voice.
