Former Kansas vocalist and songwriter/producer John Elefante is carving out quite a niche for himself by creating smooth, well-produced pop rock music which still demonstrates what a fine singer he is, but he ends up making albums that grow more like McCartney's work (check out "Exit 39", close your eyes and think of Paul!). This is slick sounding but somehow so soulless. I am alarmed that in a couple of place, there are elements of country music creeping in! Music for 45 year olds! Earnest songwriting is placed within a radio friendly setting designed to maximise the marketing opportunities, and I can imagine hundreds of American radio station managers salivating at the sound of this. But to British ears this makes no sense and for all its intricate arrangements, its beautifully recorded sonic perfection (all in John's own studio) it still washes over me and leaves me unmoved. Designed to reach the widest demographic and consequently sanitised and soulless this album demonstrates Elefante can write good songs. He is also one of the best singers in Nashville. But the sum total of that talent summed up on "Defying Gravity" makes me wonder whether there is something seriously wrong in the Nashville scene where this is just another album which is a victory of style over substance.

I love this whole album/cd that we got introduced to in October 1999. I have both the cd and vinyl copy, great artwork by ken McMillan, and title, love the thought process behind the title.
If You Just Believe is the great ccm song that starts off the album/cd. Awesome mandolin on Pass the Flame. love the bgvs too.
John believes what he writes and sings and this is what generates his music to be loved and heard. Just love the lyrics to title song. Great ccm with The Truth, The Life. as I listen, I wonder who John's musical influences were.(maybe Kansas some lol).
The Way That You Love Me has hit written on it.
Exit 39 contains awesome lyrics, just love it. I love the line "more than just religion". Closer song Give it All Away has words that speak. God bless, Don

Maybe you should have listened twice to this record before judging so hard! I think there's much substance and the songs are very deep! Have you ever listened to the lyrics!? They really touched me! I am not a fanboy and I own countless other Christian albums but I really love "Defying Gravity" and - apart from yours - it got really good reviews.

And the comparison to Paul McCartney really annoys me. Maybe it's because you're British that you seek this comparison. But elsewhere on this huge planet noone will see such a big similarity.

And, by the way, I'm not 45 but 23 and I really love this album in spite of the little country influences.

Hey Mike in Europe, you might want to read Rimmer's review of John's first cd Windows of Heaven. It is a nice positive review which I favor. You might get a different perpective reading it. God bless

I kind a agree with you there Michael, but sometimes a journalist writes to please the main public. But I believe they should write from the heart also, if claiming to be a believer in Jesus. I have not read any articles that would say the Beatles were any influence on John's music. I am also not a fan of negative reviews towards christian singers.
However, surrounded by pop music scene in California, and being front man for Kansas group for some years I'm sure had profound influence on John and his musical career. I too have countless christian/ccm music. I'm not 45 either lol. God bless.
