This is a brilliant reconstruction of a Friday Lenten devotion in a Roman oratory at the height of what we call the Baroque period. We start with a “Lament Of The Damned” followed by a retelling of “The Story Of Jepthe” from the Book of Judges. Both are by Giacomo Carissimi (1605-1674). It is Carissimi who provides the closing piece, “The Happiness Of The Blessed”. Sandwiched between Carissimi are motets and instrumental pieces by Lelio Colista and Girolamo Frescobaldi. The whole recital (or should we say Service) has been compiled and directed by the musicologist Martin Gester, the director of Le Parlement De Musique. The musicianship on this disc is superb. The accompaniment is played on period instruments and the singing is excellent. Stephan Imboden, the bass, stands out but all are first rate. Whether this disc is worship or entertainment would make a long debate. It deserves to be listened to as more than an historical curiosity.
