The website of this increasingly popular American children's Christian music brand proudly boasts that the latest Capitol Kids! release contains "no annoying kids' music." Refreshingly, this is largely a true statement as opposed to a desperate marketing ploy thanks to some relatively high quality and thankfully cringe-free vocal performances from said youngsters on a collection of 15 upbeat songs of faith that have more in common with the musical style - but wisely not the questionable moral content - of Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus than it does with some of the cheese-laden Christian kids' music currently on the market. In addition, this release benefits from some polished production by conscientious session musicians who have clearly taken the time to put together a musical backdrop that is inventive and interesting whilst expertly straddling the line between bubblegum pop and accessible dance-tinged R&B. Refusing to dumb down by shirking weightier subjects, topics such as low self-esteem ("Gold"), living in Christ's victory ("Overcomer") and confronting internal voices of regret and deceit in the defiant opener "Hello My Name Is" helps make this an above par children's release that most parents will be delighted to hear blaring from their offspring's iPods and smartphones.
