Hymns Instrumental does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a selection of instrumental versions of classic hymns and is, effectively, the backing tracks to the 2nd Chapter Of Acts albums 'Hymns' (1986) and 'Hymns 2' (1988). Reading through the inner covers and some of the highly accomplished musicians involved in this project (guitarist Phil Keaggy for example), I was expecting great and powerful renditions of many old faithfuls such as "O For A Thousand Tongues" and "All Creatures Of Our God And King" and many others which swathes of people will recognise. The songs are indeed familiar but it must be said the music didn't have the immediate impact I was hoping for. This album was originally released in 1991 and it is sadly showing signs of age, with the style edging strongly in the direction of the 'Hooked On Classics' with the heavy electronic drums and synthesizers that were prominent around the era when this was produced. I cannot deny that some of the guitar work is excellent, but it isn't enough to give an edge to the CD's otherwise uninspiring arrangements.

Some of us actually like the synthesizers and the like!
