One of the most highlighted facts about Abraham’s relationship with God is that God Himself considers it a friendship and also refers to Abraham as His friend, see James 2: 23.
We all know the difference between good and bad friends, I’m sure most of us have had a sample of both. So to know that God is a friend that sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18: 24) and that God’s opinion of a friend is that they love at all times, (Proverbs 17: 17) helps us to know that when we pray or talk to our friend in Heaven He loves us, He is closer to us than anyone else will ever be and that He is the truest friend.
Just as God was Abrahams friend in the Old Testament (Genesis 12 – 23) so He wants to be our friend too and we can know when we pray God will be the truest friend, who listens but also who tells us truthfully His opinion on our situation. Friendship is not one sided though, therefore we need to keep our friendship with God alive by constant communication with Him and by caring about Him too not just what we can get out of our friendship with Him – God has feelings just as we do!
