Children in Staffordshire were threatened with Tasers 44 times over two years. The youngest person to be tasered was 14 with police firing the stun gun at under 18 three times in 2012 and 2013. The latest figures released by the Home Office show officers drew Tasers on children 17 times in 2012 and 27 times the following year.

Polling by Saga has found that a quarter of over 50s are planning an unusual send-off, with women almost 40 per cent more likely than men to break with formality. Many say they are planning fancy dress funerals, collage coffins and even burial at sea. The research also found that 37 per cent of the group are planning a humanist farewell while 21 per cent want some other form of non-religious funeral.

The BBC’s decision to merge religion with science, history and business under a new head of ‘factual’ programming has been criticized by religious leaders. They say it ‘could not have come at a worse time’ in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo atrocity. In a letter to the Daily Telegraph the leaders said: ‘From religious efforts at tackling Ebola in West Africa, to the interfaith solidarity that has so far helped prevent the horrors of France being imported to these shores, religion remains a force for change at home and abroad. Doctors who provide end-of-life support oppose assisted suicide and think palliative care would suffer if the practice was introduced, a new survey has shown. A survey of members of the Association for Palliative Medicine found that 82 per cent of respondents opposed Lord Falconer’s assisted suicide Bill. More than 70 per cent of practicing doctors responding to the questionnaire said there would be an “adverse” or “very adverse” impact on the delivery of palliative care if assisted suicide was legalised.
