The charity ChildLine is reporting huge rises in calls from young people suffering from bullying. 31,000 troubled teens and children contacted their counsellors on the subject during the 2003/05 school year - up from 21,000 the previous year. This translates to a rise of just under 50% year on year, and the highest in ChildLines history. As well as bullying nearly 4,300 self harm calls were received in 2003/04, an increase of around 30%. The majority of these were made by teenage girls. Cutting is the most common form of self harm disclosed by young people (62%). There is often a trigger in the young person's life which leads them to self harm, these include, physical or sexual abuse, bullying, bereavement, family breakdown and exam stress. | |

An increasing number of young people pretend to take drugs in order to impress their friends. Research carried out by Frank, the free national drugs information service supported by the Department of Health, revealed that one in five teenagers lies about drug taking in order to fit in with their tribe. 35.1% of male drivers aged 18 to 20 have driven without insurance or a licence. 25.5% of 16 to 17 year old males have driven without insurance or a licence. 9.2% of 16 to 17 year old females have committed the same offence. 30% of males and 12% of females aged 21 to 25 have also offended. Approximately 16% of uninsured drivers get convicted each year. One in ten drivers has been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. Uninsured drivers are up to nine times more likely to be involved in an accident. Uninsured drivers are more likely to be involved in hit and run collisions. | |
