Despite continuing calls for tolerance from church leaders, hate crimes against Muslims or those thought to be of Middle Eastern descent rose dramatically in the United States in 2001, the year of the September 11th terrorist attacks, according to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In a report, the FBI said the number of such cases rose from 28 in 2000 to 481 in 2001 - a substantial increase since Muslims, people from the Middle East or those who appeared to be from the Middle East had never before been so noticeably the targets of hate crimes.

The ordinance, issued on October 5 in India, bans religious conversions 'by force, allurement or fraudulent means' without defining the terms. Violators are subject to three years' imprisonment, except in cases where the converts are minors, women or members of scheduled castes or tribes. In those cases the imprisonment could extend to four years with an additional fine of 100,000 rupees ($2,000). According to J.N. Manokaran of the India Missions Association, statistics do not warrant such a law. Census figures showed the Christian population at 5.69% in 1991, down from 5.78% in 1981 and 5.75% in 1971.

In Latvia, a former President has lent his support to a scheme that will show the 'Jesus Film' to every school child in his country. The project, which is being run by the Latvian Christian Teachers' Association, is supported by the Education Department and will show the film of the life of Jesus to 80,000 children each year. Trials began in 2000 and now the film is being screened in around 400 schools.

In a close vote of 259 to 228, the Liberal Democrat Youth and Students (LDYS) motion to open hardcore pornography to 16 year olds was 'Referred Back', a technical term that involves scrapping the motion and beginning a full-scale consultation on the issue. Now the party's existing policy that describes all pornography as 'degrading', remains in force and will form the basis of the new consultation. The 'Reference Back' was called by Christian MP Simon Hughes and supported by an article from LDCF Chair Martin Turner that appeared in the Conference Gazette that morning.
