Bishops need to be brought back to earth, suggested a new survey of the Church’s evangelicals, three-quarters of whom believe the consecration of women bishops would divide the Church. Nearly a third of respondents (32 per cent) did not think bishops were in touch with ordinary church life, and 60 per cent felt they should not be accommodated in palaces or large houses.

Instead, Anglicans will provide a distinct sound within the Church, the way the different instruments in an orchestra blend in a symphony, said the cardinal.

The Bible Society has reported a growing demand for copies of the Bible in China where an estimated 500,000 people convert to Christianity every year, according to a report in The Christian Post. Four million Bibles were printed and distributed across China in 2009 but the rapid growth of the church, year on year, means that demand for Bibles is outstripping supply, say the Bible Society. The official number of Christians in China stands at 28.6 million, but it is believed that the true figure could be as high as 90 million.

The Bishops of the Episcopal Church have repudiated the Anglican Communion’s moratorium on the consecration of gay bishops, and have affirmed the election of Canon Mary Glasspool as Suffragan Bishop of Los Angeles. On March 17, the Episcopal Church’s Office of Public Affairs announced that Canon Glasspool had received the support of a majority of the 110 diocesan standing committees and diocesan bishops in the church.

Two-thirds of the UK regard themselves as Christian, according to new research by the Church, as data showing a decline in the church attendance revealed changes in Christian behaviour. The survey showed that 65 per cent of the country consider themselves to be Christian. This confounds the death knells sounded for the Church following the publication of 2008 figures showing a drop in attendance for the fifth consecutive year. Average weekly attendance was down to 1,145,000 from 1,160,000 in 2007, as was average Sunday attendance at 960,000 from 978,000 in 2007. One positive for the Church was the average number of children and young people at services each week rose by three per cent to 225,000 from 219,000 in 2007. These figures have been criticised by think tank Ekklesia which wrote on its website: “Many Church of England schools, which make up one-quarter or primary schools require church attendance in order to gain priority in admissions.”

The sharp decline in Britons identifying with religious groups is being led by the Church of England, new research reveals, but the voice of the Church of England remains disproportionately influential. Over the last quarter of a century the number of British people describing themselves as Christians has dropped from 66 per cent to 50 per cent, according to new research from the National Centre for Social Research (Natcen). Professor David Voas, who analysed the British Social Attitudes Survey data, said a conservative estimate would see the same drop again the next 25 years, with only a third of the population then identifying themselves as Christian.

Choirs have been told they are not welcome to sing Christmas carols in areas of Parliament because it puts MPs off their lunch. Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning objected to the ban. The choirs come from his constituency and have entertained MPs and his staff for the past four years.

Communion wine from chalices is no longer being shared among parishioners as churches battle the swine flu pandemic. Advice form the Diocese of Lichfield and the Diocese of Chester has warned spiritual leaders to stop passing around the Communion cup for parishioners to drink from. Instead the vicar, after using an alcohol hand-ash will dunk a communion wafer into the wine then hand it to the parishioner to avoid spreading disease.

The Archbishop of Dublin has warned that the Church in Ireland must “move away from any temptation to maintain an attitude of dominance” in its relationship with the Irish State and Irish Society. Considering the changing role of the Church in Ireland in an address entitled The Irish Economy – What went wrong? How will we fix it?, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said he was not giving “a sort of blessing to a more secular vision of Ireland” and added that “no-one wanted a Church which just gives a moral veneer to the ways of Society”.

New wedding services for couples with children conceived out of wedlock are being attacked by traditionalists for betraying the Church’s teaching on sexual behaviour. Two new services allow for couples to have either their children christened while they wed, or offer a thanksgiving for the gift of a child. The Church is bowing to current trends which see 44% of children born to unmarried women. The Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Rev Stephen Platten, chair of the Liturgical Commission said: “Baptism normally is celebrated in a Sunday act of worship – but patterns of relationship and marriage within society are presenting new opportunities for the Church.

The Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham has called on the Government to simplify the gift aid system to help charities. Bishop George Cassidy argued it was important to encourage wider take-up before the end in 2011 of transitional relief, a scheme that protects charities from the impact of the drop in the basic rate of income tax.

Pope Benedict XVI stressed the Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion and stem cell research in his first meeting with US President Barack Obama. The pope pressed the Vatican’s case with Mr Obama, who is already under fire from some conservative Catholics and Bishops in the US. The 30-minute meeting at the Vatican on July 10 was described by both sides as positive, constructive talks between two men who agree on helping the poor and pushing for peace in the Middle East, but disagree on what the Vatican considers prime ethical issues.

The Church must be involved in restoring our country's values – that was the message from the Evangelical Alliance to Gordon Brown in a letter and prayer handed to Downing Street recently. As Britain reels from crises of financial and political integrity, the Alliance’s new General Director Steve Clifford has challenged the Prime Minister to invite the Church, with its expertise on values and community involvement, to contribute practically to the policy dialogue on the solutions. Clifford reminded the Prime Minister of his speech on the eve of the G20, when he said religious leaders need to provide a “shared moral sense” to help in the crisis. “You invited us then to build a new world together, and we agree with you that we need to believe in something greater than ourselves to do this,” said Clifford.

The Catholic Church was aware of long-term sexual abuse of children in Ireland’s church and state run institutions, a report revealed in May. The report from the Child Abuse Commission detailed sexual, physical and emotional abuse of thousands of children in the church’s care during the last 70 years. The inquiry produced specific findings against 216 church-run institutions.
