In August, Khartoum Central Church, where 550 Christians had been meeting each week, was closed by government agents. They said the reason for the decision was that the building was registered as an office but was being used as a place of worship. When some of the church's leaders went to the security office to try to stop the church from being closed, they were surprised to be shown a document signed by a senior church board member declaring that the property was only to be used as an office and not as a church. It is suspected that the board member signed the document under pressure and was told not to tell anyone. | |

A Christian man appeared in court on June 24 under Egypt’s blasphemy law for ‘liking’ a Facebook page that local Muslims deemed offensive to Islam; the case prompted attacks by Islamists on Christian property. Kerolos Shouky Attallah (29) from a village near Luxor, was charged with showing disdain or contempt for a heavenly religion, which carries a penalty of between six months and five years in prison, or a fine. The Facebook page is run by a group of converts from Islam. | |

New report documents 241 cases of intolerance against Christians in Europe in 2013. The Austria-based Observatory on Intolerance Against Christians in Europe has reported that the number of "hate-related incidents against Christians in Europe are rising", with incidents ranging from vandalism against churches to bullying in the workplace and violence against Christians pro-life campaigners. The report notes that incidents of intolerance have also involved limitations on free speech by hate speech legislation and restrictions on the freedom of conscience of Christian employees, with the most affected groups including medical staff, marriage registrars and wedding facility owners. | |

Officials turned down applications to hold a children’s fun day based on the Bible story at either Hyde Park or Greenwich Park in London. More than 2,000 Christians gathered in Colombo on January 26 to protest against a perceived lack of religious freedom in Sri Lanka, following recent attacks on Christian places of worship by Buddhist extremists. Two churches and a Christian prayer centre were attacked on January 12 by Buddhist mobs, claiming they were illegal and aiming to take Buddhists away from their religion. | |
