Laos Some 35 government agents are currently in Nam Thuam - one agent per Christian household - living with Christian families. The Christian households must cover all the expenses of each agent until they renounce their faith. In the village of Thong Sa Vang, Phinh District, Savannakhet Province, all Christians have been asked to renounce their faith or face arrest. Throughout that Province some 20 churches are routinely forced to close their doors. The underground church has seen significant growth in recent years and may number up to 100,000 professed believers. The years from 1997 until this present day have been the most oppressive for Christians since the communists came to power. Christians have been imprisoned and forced to sign statements rejecting their faith. Many have been put to death. | |

One 15-year-old boy, who was tortured for his faith, said to his captors: I am a soldier of Christ. So they cut off one of his hands. Are you still? they asked. An American missionary was shot to death in Kenya by a group of gunmen near the Ugandan border. Paul A Ritchery was working with Outreach Baptist Church on both sides of the order. He was reportedly watching television with the local children when armed intruders entered and robbed the guest house where he was staying. | |

Two Christians arrested in Egypt over charges of helping converts from Islam obtain new identity papers have been arrested again following their recent release. According to the Barnabas Fund, which campaigns for persecuted Christians, the officer responsible is known for his 'particularly aggressive' attitude to converts. | |
