Long delays to cancer treatment are causing people to suffer anxiety and depression, a charity has warned. A survey of more than 1,000 people recently diagnosed with cancer chows nearly two thirds (63 per cent) experienced mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, while waiting for their treatment to start. Macmillan Cancer Support, which carried out the poll across England, said this could equate to around 190,000 people a year. | |

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) has called for a specialist centre offering late-term abortions to Scottish women, after the publication of a controversial new report. The study, by researchers at Glasgow University, advocates wider provision of abortion between 16 weeks and the legal limit of 24 weeks, calling it a “legitimate pregnancy outcome”. | |

Doctors should screen all mothers for depression and anxiety in the weeks after giving birth, according to the NHS advisory body. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence said staff are too often confusing symptoms of mental health disorders, such as sleep disruption and changes to appetite, with “what is considered normal” in postnatal women. | |

Doctors have created a 'brain-reading' device which allows them to communicate with patients who have 'locked-in syndrome' (CLIS), a condition that leaves people completely paralysed but aware and able to think.
