| A new coalition was launched in Brussels in mid-November to combat the growing threat of euthanasia across Europe. The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition Europe (EPC-Europe) brings together organisations and individuals from across the continent to campaign against the erosion of laws that protect people from euthanasia. It plans to act as a powerful voice against attempts to change laws across Europe that protect people from euthanasia and assisted suicide. | |

| The sultan of Brunei announced on October 22 that the country will be ruled according to sharia law, which will be introduced in phases from April 2014. Penalties for hudud crimes will be in line with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah (the deeds and sayings of Muhammed). Hudud crimes include theft, for which sharia requires the amputation of limbs, adultery, which is punished by stoning, and apostasy, which carries the death penalty. Muslims who insult, mock or deny Islamic teachings may face imprisonment for up to 30 years and 40 strokes of the cane. | |

| Belgium is closer to introducing child euthanasia, after a Senate committee voted 13-4 in favour of the proposals in late November. The Bill, which extends euthanasia to children of any age suffering terminal illnesses and adults with dementia, must now clear further hurdles in the legislative process before it becomes law. If passed, Belgium would become the first country in the world to remove the age limit, as the Netherlands already allow euthanasia but restrict it to 12-year-olds and older. | |

| The chief minister of an Indian state in August wrote to the country’s prime minister urging that Christian dalits be given the same rights as their Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist counterparts after decades of discrimination. J. Jayalalitha of Tamil Nadu state sent an official letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on August 9 asking him to discuss the matter in Parliament. | |

| Suspected Islamist gunmen have attacked a college in north-eastern Nigeria, killing up to 50 students. The students were shot dead as they slept in their dormitory at the College of Agriculture in Yobe state. North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency amid an Islamist insurgency by the Boko Haram group. They are currently fighting to overthrow Nigeria’s government to create an Islamic state, and have launched a number of attacks on schools. Casualty figures from the latest attack vary, but a local politician said two vanloads of bodies had been taken to a hospital in Yobe’s state capital, Damaturu. | |

| The Bible was Norway’s best selling book in the 2012, it was reported in June. A new translation by the Norwegian Bible society has sold 160,000 copies. Anne Veiteberg, of Norway’s Bible Society, commented that immigration has been a factor, with 250,000 immigrants settling in Norway in the past six years, 60% of whom claim to be Christian. She said: ‘Now that we’re exposed to other faiths, Norwegians have taken more interest in their own faith’. | |

| Belgium appears on the verge of becoming the first developed country to legalise euthanasia for children, it was reported in June. The Belgian Federal Parliament reportedly has a consensus for passing legislation that would permit some seriously ill children to choose to die by euthanasia, according to the International Business Times, which based its reporting on an article in the Belgian newspaper Der Morgen. | |

| Botshelo Moilwa, a young woman from Gaborone, Botswana, called on churches to affirm the dignity of women amidst the realities of HIV and AIDS and sexual violence, if they are to realise the Christian vision of justice and peace. As one of the speakers at the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) 10th Assembly in Kampala, Uganda, Moilwa was addressing the theme “God of life, lead Africa to justice, peace and dignity.” Representing the Botswana Council of Churches, Moilwa stressed that “affirming the dignity of women means affirming the dignity of Africa” for which she encouraged young theologians to work together. Based on her experience since 2010 of coordinating a project on HIV and AIDS targeting female sex workers, in partnership with Kgolagano College of Theological Education in Botswana, Moilwa called violence against women a major challenge for the African churches | |

| Two members of a Protestant community in a village in the eastern Lebap region of Turkmenistan were fined more than two months’ average local wages after police were informed that a church member was reading Christian literature at work, it was reported in May. State religious officials and police raided several local Christians’ homes, confiscating Bibles and other literature. | |

| New South Wales (NSW) will once again be subjected to an attempt to legalise euthanasia, it was reported in May. Catherine Faehrman MP (Green NSW Party) in late April announced her intension to submit legislation titled Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill 2013 for NSW’s Upper House to discuss. Previous such attempts in NSW have been defeated by a wide range of cross-party opposition. | |

| David Cameron has called on Argentina to respect the wishes of the people of the Falkland Islands to remain British. The prime minister said the almost unanimous vote in favour of staying a British overseas territory was the ‘clearest possible result’. He said Argentina should take ‘careful note’ of the referendum, and Britain would always defend the islands. It follows pressure from Argentina over its claims to the islands, 31 years after the Falklands War with the UK. Most Argentines regard the islands, which they call Las Malvinas, as Argentine and their recovery is enshrined in the national constitution. Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has made clear that her country does not recognise the referendum, insisting it has no legal validity. | |

| A baby girl in the U.S. born with HIV appears to have been cured after very early treatment with standard drug therapy. The Mississippi child is now two-and-a-half- years old and has been off medication for about a year with no signs of infection. More testing needs to be done to see if the treatment – given within hours of birth – would work for others. If the girl stays healthy, it would be the world’s second reported ‘cure’. | |

| A Herald on Sunday poll in early January showed that support for same-sex ‘marriage’ in New Zealand had fallen to 53% from a previous high of 63% in May 2012. ‘These results are energising our campaign to maintain the definition of marriage as is’, said Bob McCoskrie, national director of Family First NZ. | |
