Cyprus has become the fifth eurozone country to request financial aid as it struggles to shore up it’s banks which took heavy losses on Greek debt. Its government said it required assistance following ‘negative spill-over effects through it’s financial sector, due to its large exposure in the Greek economy’. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou would not say how much Cyprus would ask for from the European bailout fund, adding that the amount would be subject to negotiations. | |

The Prince of Wales has urged world leaders to adopt a better approach to issues like climate change. In a speech to a UN sustainability conference in Brazil yesterday, he warned of the potentially ‘catastrophic’ consequences of inaction on issues such as climate change. In the video address, shown to the Rio+20 High Level Dialogue on Global Sustainability, Charles warned: ‘Once the worst does happen, I am afraid it will be too late to act at all.’ | |

David Cameron pledged to continue defending the Falklands Islands from Argentine ‘aggressive threats’ as he marked the 30th anniversary of the South Atlantic territory’s liberation. The Prime Minister hailed the ‘astonishing courage’ of the British forces who took part in the operation and led tributes to the 255 who lost their lives. And Mr Cameron said the hoped the decision by the Falkland Islands government to hold a referendum on their future sovereignty would end the dispute with Argentina ‘one and for all.’ | |

Chancellor George Osborn raised the question of whether the shock of Greek departure from the Euro may be needed in order to persuade Germany to sign up to the measures needed to secure the survival of the single currency. Mr Osborn said that he did not know whether the Greek exit from the currency was, in fact, necessary, to pave the way for the establishment of a eurozone banking union and Eurobonds to help solve the crisis. | |

Falkland Islanders are to vote in a referendum of the future sovereignty of their South Atlantic homeland. The Falklands Island Government said it hopes the vote – to be held early next year – will send a firm message to Argentina that Islanders want to remain British. Three decades after Margaret Thatcher sent 27000 troops and more than 100 ships to expel Argentinean invaders, Buenos Aires continues to set its sights on claiming the territory it calls Las Malvinas. | |

Britain yesterday ordered Syria’s charge d’affaires to leave the country within seven days as part of a co-ordinated global response to a massacre of 108 people in Houla. The United Nations said most of the victims last week were shot at close range. Foreign Secretary William Hague expressed horror at the events and alongside similar action from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United States, Canada and Australia, ordered three diplomats, including the charge d’affaires out of the country. | |

David Cameron warned fellow European leaders of the need for the eurozone to take ‘decisive action’ to ensure stability, in a high-level conference call over the Greek crisis. The PM spoke for 45 minutes with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti. He took part in the talks, which came hours after Mr Cameron issued his starkest warning yet of the dangers posed by the debt crisis in Greece. The leaders were due to attend a G8 meeting, which starts in the U.S. today. | |

New French President Francois Hollande, pledged to buck Europe’s austerity trend and Nato’s timetable for Afghanistan. After an appearance before thronging crowds on Paris’ Place de la Bastille, the socialist vowed to ‘finish with austerity’. He will officially become President on May 15. Incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy is now the latest victim of a wave of voter anger over spending cuts in Europe. | |

More than half of Europe's development aid budget is going to 'middle-income' countries which should not qualify. A report by a House of Commons Committee challenges the UK Government, which provided £1.23 billion in aid via the EU in 2010, to demand tougher standards to ensure support goes to the neediest nations. Taxpayers want the aid they give to go to the places where it can make the most difference, to countries where millions of people are getting by on less then £1 a day. | |

The Taliban has vowed revenge after at least one U.S. soldier shot 16 Afghan civilians and burned their bodies. The attack, which comes as nearly three-quarters of the British public believe that the war in Afghanistan is unwinnable, has fuelled anger still simmering after U.S. troops burned Korans last month. U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan have stepped up security following the shootings in Kandahar province out of concerns about retaliatory attacks. The U.S. embassy has also warned American citizens in Afghanistan about the possibility of reprisals. | |

About 500 million Chinese citizens are online – that is a quarter of the world’s social network users and double the number of Internet users in the United States. As with most countries, China’s netizens are dominated by the younger generation – nearly 60 percent of 10-29 year olds are online while older demographic groups have been slower to adopt the Internet. In line with the high rate of adoption of modern communications, and access to international best practice, China’s 1.3 billion people have more than 900 million mobile phones in operation, 350 million mobile Internet users and 300 million registered micro-blog users, most of them very active on Sina Weibo and its competitors. Tibet will begin construction of the world’s highest altitude airport in 2012, according to a government work report at the regional economic work conference. The airport, at a planned altitude of 4,436 metres in Nagqu prefecture, will be 102 metres higher than Bamda Airport in Tibet’s Qamdo prefecture, currently the world’s highest, according to the report. The airport is designed to cover an area of up to 267 hectares. The China Civil Aviation Administration has said the airport is expected to cost 1.8 billion yuan ($285 million; 220 million euros) with a three-year construction period. | |
