| The UK’s largest private abortion provider, BPAS, has called for laws banning efforts to educate people about abortion outside the facilities where it takes place, it was reported in November. Although in 2012 it stated that it was keen to protect freedom of speech, it now wants to create ‘buffer zones’ around clinics. | |

| A Christian-run bakery in Northern Ireland is still under threat of legal action after declining to produce a pro-gay marriage campaign cake. The McArthur family, who own the Ashers Baking Company, said they could not fulfil the order because of their conviction that marriage is between a man and a woman...A survey of over 2,000 people found that most believed the Christians had been treated unfairly...A poll commissioned by The Christian Institute found that 60% of British adults agree it was "disproportionately heavy-handed" for the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland to seek to take the bakery to court. It also showed that most people agree there should be protection in law so that people are not forced to provide goods or services that violate their sincerely-held beliefs. | |

| The private prosecution of a doctor accused of offering 'gender-abortion' has been committed to the Crown Court. A pre-trial review will take place in January. It is a significant development in the case brought by Aisling Hubert and supported by the Christian Legal Centre, after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) last year refused to bring a prosecution. However, the CPS has been asked to takeover the case and drop it. | |

| The Council of Europe's Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination has published a report entitled "tackling intolerance and discrimination in Europe with a special focus on Christians". The document, which cites a number of cases supported by the Christian Legal Centre and also makes reference to Christian Concern's barring from the Law Society and QEII Conference Centre, is due to be debated by the Parliamentary Assembly in late January. | |

| The penalty for using a mobile phone while driving could be doubled from the current three points. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin’s suggestion comes after Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe called for offenders to get six points on their licence. The increased sanctions would mean that a driver could be banned if they were caught twice in three years. A Government spokesman said it was “considering a number of options”. Offenders are currently given three points on their license and an initial £100 fine. | |

| The European Court of Human Rights has upheld a ban by France on wearing the Muslim full-face veil – the niqab. A case was brought by a 24-year-old French woman, who argued that the ban on wearing the veil in public violated her freedom of expression. French law says nobody can wear in a public space clothing intended to conceal the face. The penalty for doing so can be a 150-euro fine (£120). A breach of the ban can also mean a wearer having to undergo citizenship instruction. | |

| A sweeping parenting law that would criminalise emotional neglect will reportedly be included in the Queen’s Speech on June 4. The new law would carry a maximum prison sentence of ten years for anyone who deliberately harms a child’s “physical, intellectual, emotional, social or behavioural development”. But critics have warned against the legislation saying it would mean that “every mother and father is at risk of being labelled an abuser”. | |

| Magistrates will, in October, debate scrapping the religious oath for witnesses and defendants in court, but critics have raised fears that the move could further erode the Christian heritage of Britain. Instead, all those giving evidence in court would make a secular pledge, which it is thought would make it fairer and more relevant for people and help them understand the importance of what they are saying. | |

| In March, the health committee of the Welsh Assembly backed a controversial bill to bring in presumed consent for organ donation. The Assembly members who considered the bill have raised concerns about the role of the family in consenting to organ donation, saying that clarity and consistency are needed. | |

| Car owners face an automatic £80 fine if litter is thrown out of the window of their vehicle, even if a passenger is to blame. CCTV cameras and traffic wardens would be deployed under proposals to cut the amount of roadside rubbish. The plan, which is being put before the House of Lords today and is supported by local councils, would close a loophole in the law, which makes it virtually impossible to bring to book those responsible for dropping litter from moving vehicles. | |
