Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly have voted against liberalising the region’s abortion laws. Currently, abortion in Northern Ireland is illegal. Members of the Legislative Assembly had proposed to legalise abortion in cases where doctors believe that the baby will have a fatal foetal abnormality. | |

The High Court has ruled that an opposite-sex couple is not being discriminated against because they are not allowed to enter into a civil partnership. Charles Keidan and Rebecca Steinfeld said they want to be "partners in law", but do not want to marry. The judge dismissed the couple's claim for judicial review, but gave them permission to appeal the decision, saying their case raised issues of "wider importance". | |

Members of the Scottish Parliament have thrown out a petition to legalise incest between adults. MSPs rejected the petition, which asked the Scottish government to amend the law on incest, so that it would no longer apply to consenting adults over the age of 21. | |

The largest ever public consultation carried out by the Equality and Human Rights commission has found widespread public confusion and misunderstanding about the laws protecting freedom of religion or belief. Nearly 2,500 people responded to the call for evidence, with the largest number of responses coming from Christians from number of denominations. Some reported that they feared their religion is losing its place in the workplace and in society more generally, that they felt they were under pressure to keep their religion hidden and were discriminated against when it came to wearing religious symbols or expressing their beliefs. | |

Drivers in England will be banned from smoking in their cars if they are carrying children as passengers. The move which will become law on 1st October, follows a similar ban in Wales and aims to protect young people under 18 from second-hand smoke. Scotland is also considering introducing a ban. Anyone found flouting the law in England could be fined £50. According to the British Lung Foundation 430,000 children are exposed to second-hand smoke in cars each week. | |

A High Court judge in May granted permission for a Judicial Review of the liberalisation of the prosecution policy in relation to the law on assisted suicide. An October amendment to the policy made the prosecution of healthcare professionals in assisted suicide cases less likely. Granting permission, Lord Justice Bean said that the granting of this review said nothing about the strength of the claim, expect that it was not frivolous. | |
