The Government today ruled that broadcasting giant BSkyB must offload some of its controversial 17.9 per cent stake in ITV. Secretary of State for Business and Enterprise, John Hutton, has told Sky it must sell-down the shareholding to below 7.5 per cent and cannot take a seat on ITV’s board. The decision could cost Sky around £250 million.

Two British technology firms have teamed up to launch what is being billed as the world’s first platform-agnostic radio, bringing together FM, DAB and internet radio via wi-fi. The Blik Radio station has been jointly produced by Frontier Silicon and Revo, and is the first DAB radio capable of receiving the new DAB+ standard without the need for additional software.

Millions of people across the UK saw the ground-breaking Alpha television advertisment which was broadcast on Channel Four and digital stations E4 and E4+1 in the autumn. The avertisement, which was also shown on 2,000 cinema screens and in busses and bars. was the first Christian commercial ever to be shown on mainstream TV in Britain. The 60 - second animated film, which also provided the theme for a nationwide campaign, depicts human life as a conveyor belt from birth to death with many wry humorous touches.

Children who watch television excessively at a young age are at greater risk of developing behavioural problems and poor social skills. American researchers found that a sustained, high level of viewing in children under five-and-a-half years old increased the chances of them having behaviour problems in the future. Children of five-and-a-half who were watching two or more hours a day were more likely to have fewer social skills, although the study also showed children this young who had a TV in their rooms are more at risk of having behavioural problems. Parents could still avoid their children being at a higher risk if they reduced their viewing by the age of around five, it said.

A community became the first in the UK to lose one of its analogue television channels today. Around 25,000 households in Whitehaven and Copeland in Cumbria had analogue BBC Two switched off shortly after 2am. The remaining analogue channels will be switched off in four weeks, to be replaced by digital television.

Chinese television and radio are to be cleaned up, China’s broadcasting watchdog has announced. There will be a ban on ‘sexually suggestive’ advertising and ‘vulgar’ adverts considered ‘socially corrupting’ and ‘detrimental to society’. The government is preparing for the Chinese Communist Party’s five-yearly congress and the 2008 Olympic Games.

Britons are more likely to get upset about losing their mobile phone than they are about losing their pet, a survey showed. Two thirds of people said they would be upset if they lost their mobile, narrowly beating the 64% who would feel the same way if their pet went missing, according to mobile-phone insurer Lifeline.

Rock and pop stars are more than twice as likely to suffer a premature death as other people, according to research published today. A study of more than 1,000 stars who shot to fame between 1956 and 1999 found they were much more likely to die. The research published ahead of print in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, studies celebrities from North America and Europe from the All-time Top 1,000 albums.

Aslan, the Pevensie children and the magical land of Narnia are to hit the silver screen again, as now all seven of the Narnia books are to be made into feature films. Following the success of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005 Walden Media and Walt Disney Pictures have announced their intention to make films of the rest of the books. Prince Caspian will be the next to roll out, with a release date currently set for May 2008. It will be directed by Andrew Adamson and once more star the voice of Liam Neeson as Aslan.

A US senate committee has passed a harsh new bill which could see radio stations hit with a zero-tolerance fine for every time they broadcast an “indecent” word. The bill would give the Federal Communications Commission, the US equivalent of broadcast regulator Ofcom, the ability to impose penalties on stations found violating the agency’s regulations on indecency.

Government anti-smoking adverts which sparked hundreds of complaints broke industry rules because they frightened children, a watchdog ruled today. They showed people with fishhooks through their mouths to illustrate being 'hooked' on cigarettes. The Department of Health’s TV commercials, posters and press adverts prompted 774 objections from the public. The Advertising Standards Authority said the adverts 'were likely to frighten and distress children'.

TV soaps have come under fire from media watchdog Ofcom for showing too much violence on screen. The watchdog said it was concerned about a growing trend of viewer complaints about the issue. It has taken the unusual decision to 'remind' broadcasters to limit such content after receiving a number of complaints about popular ITV soap Emmerdale.
