Justin Welby has urged big firms to pay taxes in the countries where they earn the money and consider how they support society. The Archbishop agreed that tax was a moral issue. He added that misusing power accrued through wealth is ‘what the Bible calls sin’. However, the Archbishop, a former city oil executive, insisted that this did not mean that ‘business is bad’. He said it was important to ‘affirm’ the role of wealth creation.

The East London NHS Foundation Trust has been taken to an employment tribunal this week by Victoria Wasteney, a senior occupational therapist who works for them. She is accusing it of discriminating against her because of her Christian faith. She was accused of ‘bullying and harassing’ a Muslim colleague who told managers that Ms Wasteney had tried to convert her to Christianity.

Workers have won a ground-breaking case to include overtime in holiday pay. This means some people working overtime could claim for additional holiday pay. Currently, only basic pay counts when calculating holiday pay. The tribunal also ruled that workers can make backdated claims but only for a limited period. However, the ruling could be referred to the Court of Appeal, meaning that a final decision may be years away. The ruling has widespread implications for companies where staff are required to do overtime as a regular part of their job.

Twice as many young people are now volunteering compared to 10 years ago, according to new research. A third of young people now volunteer for good causes – the figure is nearly double that of a decade ago and the young are now the most likely to give up their time. The poll, published by research consultancy nfpSynergy, also reveals that volunteering is up 5% since January last year, meaning 1 in 4 people are now volunteers. The research, taken from a nationally representative survey of 1000 Britons, shows that 34% of 16-24 year olds volunteer, double the 18% recorded in 2003. They are now the most likely age group to volunteer, consistently polling the highest figures after a dramatic three-year rise took them above the over 65s.

The Archbishop of York, the Most Rev John Sentamu, has called on the government to cut the number of low-paid workers by one million, describing the aim as ‘the litmus test of a fair recovery’. Dr Sentamu is chair of the Living Wage Commission, whose final report was published recently and argues that the government has a crucial role to play in implementing the living wage. Distinct from the legal minimum wage, the living wage is defined as what it actually costs to enjoy a basic but socially accepted standard of living. While more people are at work in the UK than ever before, average incomes have fallen for the last five years. The report estimates that 5.2 million people currently earn less than the living wage.

Local authority employers have offered a one per cent pay rise to around a million council workers. The employers, who negotiate on behalf of 350 councils, said the increase would increase the local government pay bill by more than £164 million. The offer applies to staff ranging from librarians, refuse collectors and cleaners to social workers and architects. The offer does not apply to chief executives, senior officers, teachers or fire-fighters, who are covered by separate pay arrangements.

Britain’s most senior Roman Catholic cleric has called for political leaders to extinguish ‘the discourse of fear’ that plagues immigration’s contribution to the economy. The Most Rev Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, said migrant workers helped ensure large cities were able to ‘carry on working’, and said it was time for senior politicians to ‘appeal to do something more normal and more substantial than fear’ when discussing foreign workers’ contribution to the economy.
