A council has been criticised for funding a nine-day “fact-finding” tour of the U.S. to learn how major visitor attractions are run there. Four out of 10 small firms are considering closing their existing pension scheme when the Government’s new personal accounts are introduced in 2012. Around 41% of companies with less than 250 staff are thinking of replacing their existing scheme with low-cost personal accounts, according to the Association of Consulting Actuaries (ACA). Around 54% of smaller employers also said they were likely to revise the pension benefits they offered.

The jobs market is improving for the first time in 17 months, with slight increases in permanent and temporary positions, according to a report today. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation said vacancies were still falling, but at a lower pace than at any time in the past year. Research among 400 recruitment consultancies also revealed that pay rates continued to fall in August, although at the lowest rate in 10 months. REC chief executive Kevin Green said these “green shoots” must be built upon.

Police officers in Hampshire have been banned from listening to the radio at work because of the rules imposed on office listening by the performing rights bodies. In an email memo to all staff, the force said it refused to pay the “substantial” PPL fees. Deputy chief constable Simon Cole said: “Hampshire Constabulary does not believe taxpayers would approve of the expenditure of public money for this purpose in police offices.”

Pagan police officers are being allowed to take up to eight days a year holiday to observe Pagan festivals such as Halloween. The changes came as the Home Office agreed to the establishment of a Pagan Police Association. A spokesman for the Home Office said: “The Government wants a police service that reflects the diverse communities it serves. Pagan practices include witchcraft, druidism and Wiccan worship.

Ministers have announced a £52,000 cash injection to help bring empty shops back into use. Stoke-on-Trent is among 57 deprived areas of England which will benefit from the £3million fund. Each area will receive £52,632 to spend on refurbishing empty shops. Announcing the funding yesterday, Communities Secretary John Denham said: “We know that the downturn has really hurt high streets in areas of high deprivation, these grants will help to transform and re-open empty shops to keep town centres vibrant and combat the recession. Councils will now be able to use our funding to come up with their own creative ideas to transform boarded up shops into something useful.

Record numbers of recruits are signing up to the Army to escape the recession. Officers have seen a massive influx of school leavers and skilled tradesmen from the Potteries area seeking new careers since the beginning of the year. A total of 212 people signed up for the Army at the Stoke-on-Trent recruitment office in 2008, 231 in 2007 and 232 in 2006, but since April 1 this year 175 people have enlisted for positions ranging from chefs to infantry.

Older workers are facing a “recession double whammy” with many fearing they will lose their jobs at a time when the value of their pension has fallen. Charities Help the Aged and Age Concern said people over the age of 50 worried that they would be forced out of their jobs at a time when their pension is not big enough to provide them with a comfortable retirement income.

Unemployment soared by almost a quarter of a million in the first three months of the year, the biggest rise since 1981, leaving the jobless total at more than 2.2 million, new figures reveal. The number of people claiming Job-seekers Allowance increased by 57,100 last month to 1,513,000; while the number of people in work fell by 157,000 between January and March.

The number of people that have to scrap holidays due to work commitment is growing, it was revealed today. As many as 22 percent have had to abandon trips this year because of work pressures - two percent up on the total in 2008, a survey by travel company expedia found. Britons get an average 26 days holiday a year and end up not taking two of the days , the poll of 10,000 adults showed.

In the you tube clip, Ernest Hartley of Northants says ''Just to let you know, I’m here looking for a job. If there is anybody out there that could help, it would be much appreciated’’. Debt counselling charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) has been awarded 'best small company' by the Sunday Times for the second year running. The company beat nearly 1,000 other companies to claim the award, which was based on responses to anonymous questionnaires sent to all employers about quality of working life. Topics included ongoing training, career prospects and quality of leadership. The survey showed that 97 percent of employers felt proud to work for CAP with 93 percent also stating that working for the charity was good for personal growth. In addition, 99 percent felt that the company made a positive difference to the World.

An employee at a Christian ‘homeless’ charity, whose patron is the Archbishop of Canterbury, has been suspended for answering questions about his faith to a colleague at work. David Booker, 44, from Southampton, has worked for the English Churches Housing Group (ECHG) for almost four years. On March 26 while working an evening shift he had a 35 minute conversation with a female colleague Fiona Vardy. Ms Vardy asked him about his faith and beliefs. During the conversation he was asked the Church’s teaching on homosexuality and same-sex marriages, which Mr. Booker explained. The conversation was free-flowing and Mr. Booker clearly explained that he had homosexual friends and was not homophobic. The following day he was summoned by his employers and told that he was suspended for ‘events that happened last night’. On March 30, he was given a formal suspension notice alleging that ‘On March 25 2009 while on shift with Fiona Vardy, you seriously breached ECHG’s code of conduct by promoting your religious views which contained discriminatory comments regarding a person’s sexual orientation’.
