Education campaigner Malala Yousafzai has been named as the joint winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The 17 year-old who survived being shot in the head by Pakistani Taliban gunmen, was presented with the award alongside Indian child rights campaigner, Kallash Satyarthi. She became the youngest ever to receive the accolade. The Nobel committee said both were ‘champions of peace’. | |

Sharing family meals can help protect teenagers from the distressing effects of cyberbullying, according to a new study. Researchers from the US and Canada asked nearly 19,000 12 to 18-year-olds in the state of Wisconsin questions about their experience of cyberbullying and a range of issues, including mental health and substance abuse problems...But eating four or more family dinners per week almost halved the risk of cyberbullying victims developing mental health or substance abuse problems. | |

New figures reveal that in Scotland, over 3,500 girls under the age of consent have been given long-term contraception. According to freedom of information requests highlighted by the Scottish Daily Mail, schoolgirls as young as twelve have had contraceptive devices implanted into their arms. The figures, taken from five health boards across Scotland, show that in many cases this took place without parental consent. | |

David Cameron has announced that online music videos will be given age ratings in order to protect children. He unveiled a pilot scheme with the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and YouTube which will rate videos if they are deemed to have inappropriate content. | |

Children are being affected by graphic content in video games, including violence and prostitution, a YouGov survey has found. One in four parents said that they notice a negative change in behaviour when their children play certain video games. A third of parents interviewed felt that gaming was occupying so much of their children’s time that it was hampering their physical activity. | |

Eight in 10 thought that most young men look at pornography and four out of 10 also said the same of young women. British film director Steve McQueen said it was ‘upsetting’ after a survey found one in five black children thought their skin colour would make it more difficult for them to be successful. Research by BBC’s Newsround programme found 21% of black children felt it would make it harder to succeed in the future, compared with just 2% of white children and 13% of Asian origin. | |

The issue of cyber bullying among young people was discussed by Parliament in December as the House of Commons engaged in a two and a half hour debate on the subject. The motion was tabled by Democratic Unionist MP David Simpson who said: ‘Recent reports have found that approximately 65 per cent of teenagers say they have experience online bullying… Many of these children emphasised how difficult it can be to find help when they have been bullied.’ | |

The National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL) has revealed some interesting facts about young people’s attitudes towards sex and relationships: it is the younger generations who are most hostile towards adultery and teenage pregnancy is at its lowest level since 1969.
