| The company Planet Wise reported the following statistics. 25 per cent of travellers leave the UK without adequate insurance cover. 70 per cent of travellers conduct little or no research before they go. Young travellers spend more time buying a penknife than insurance. More people than ever are using their retirement to travel the world over a third (36 per cent) of mature travellers planning at least one long haul adventure, with the Far East and Africa being the most visited in the last five years. | |

| A study of the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth games shows that visitor numbers to Greater Manchester increased by 9.5 per cent from 77.1 million in 1999 to 84.4 million in 2002, with most visitors coming from the US. As a result, £2bn was generated in tourism in 2002, a 19 per cent rise on the previous year and a 27 per cent increase since 1999. Employment in the tourist sector rose by more than 10 per cent from 33,500 full time posts in 2001 to 36,900 equivalent full time posts in 2002. | |
