Oxfam today launched an online charity shop with some 50,000 items for sale. Goods on offer include donated clothes, books, and household items along with Fairtrade products. They will be sold at fixed prices in the same way as second-hand items and Oxfam’s high street stores. An estimated 120,000 donated items will be listed on the website by next spring. | |

The internet is bucking the UK retail market as shoppers spend record amounts online, research out today shows. An estimated £8.2 billion of goods were bought from websites last year - up 28.9% on 2004, according to market analysts Verdict. This growth rate was nearly 19 times higher than the rise in overall retail spending for last year. | |

50 years ago John Lewis sold secondary school girls blouses with chest sizes ranging from 28 to 36 inches. Now they are up to 44 inches. Skirt sizes have risen from 22 to 28 inches in 1954 to 34 inches today. A similar pattern is seen with boys clothes. The largest size for jumpers was once 36 inches. Now it is 46. School shirts are up to a 17 inch collar, compared to 14 in 1954. In shoes, some boys need adult size 10 in a width fitting of G or H, compared to an average of D-E in the 1950s. | |
