Teenage girls are now binge drinking more frequently than boys, according to a report published yesterday. It is the first time girls have outstripped their male peers in excessive alcohol consumption. Experts warned that the rise in young female drinking was an "unprecedented phenomenon" that could threaten the health of a generation of women. Girls in their teens are being treated for alcohol related diseases, according to experts, with a girl aged 17 in Liverpool diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Youth workers said children were turning up drunk to afternoon-activity clubs within hours of the end of school.British teenagers are among the heaviest drinkers in the study, which looked at the habits of 15 and 16 year olds in 35 European countries.

Half of regular smokers of cannabis who are psychologically vulnerable to its effects may end up needing treatment for psychosis, scientists said yesterday. Up to 10% of the adult population, almost four million people, has a tendency to paranoid thoughts or grandiose ideas that may be tipped into psychotic delusions by the effects of the drug, they said. A four-year study of 2,437 people aged 14 to 24 found that of those who smoked cannabis regularly and had a pre-existing risk of psychosis, 50% developed psychotic symptoms over the period. This was twice the rate among those who did not use cannabis and more than three times higher than among those who were neither vulnerable nor took the drug.

The average street price of illegal drugs is at the lowest level for a decade, according to new figures. The cost of a line of cocaine is now less than a glass of wine in some parts of Britain. Dealers are now selling heroin for as little as £35 a gram, compared with more than £80 in 1995, according to the Independent Drugs Monitoring Unit.

Drug abuse is widespread at British secondary schools, according to a survey of more than 1,000 teenage girls. 71% told a poll by Cosmogirl that cannabis was regularly used at their schools, despite a wealth of anti-drug messages from the Government. The poll shows that a third of its readers smoke, says the magazine, while more than half drink, most of them illegally - results which will dismay ministers whose recently published White Paper on health attempts to cut down consumption of both tobacco and alcohol.

A majority of drug addicts would rather receive help to kick their habit than be taught how to use drugs safely, a report said today. Nearly 57% of drug addicts wanted treatment courses to help them get off drugs rather than offer 'harm reduction' initiatives such as methadone programmes or clean needles, researchers at Glasgow University found. Drug treatment centres may need to re-assess their tactics in light of the findings, the report said.

Adrian Scarfe, a clinical practice manager for the charity GamCare, has no doubt that a new study would produce more frightening figures. Some have suggested it could reach 700,000 by 2010.
