The proposal failed to attract cross-community support, however, and was finally blocked, as the DUP had presented a 'petition of concern'.

Britain should do more to encourage mothers to take on paid work, an EU institution has suggested. The Council of the European Union claims that the number of mothers who choose either not to work or to work part-time represents a "social challenge" and it calls on the UK Government to provide more child-care. The number of UK mothers choosing to remain at home, often to care for children, has already fallen from nearly 3 million in 1993 to just over 2 million now.

The UK's four children's commissioners have called for a ban on parents smacking their children. Under current law in England and Wales, parents can exercise "reasonable punishment" of their children. This includes mild smacking, as long as no implement is used and no mark left. There is similar provision in Scotland and Northern Ireland. But the four nations' commissioners have called for a complete ban on smacking, in a report submitted to the UN.

Medical abortions – in which the woman aborts her child by taking pills – are on the rise, according to newly released Department of Health statistics. Nearly two in every five women receiving an abortion in 2014 had had at least one previous abortion, and over 3000 abortions were performed because the child was disabled.

The BBC has reported on the growing US trend of egg freezing parties for women who want to delay having children. The parties are usually hosted by companies offering egg harvesting and storage services. Women can have their eggs frozen as a way of "preserving" their fertility as they grow older.

The number of embryos killed in the UK has increased almost every year since records began, now amounting to 170,000 a year, according to new figures. The same figures also show that 2,053,656 embryos have been killed since 1990. The figures are held by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and were released in a parliamentary answer to Lord Alton.
