The Government is to expand its system of Biometric Residence Permits (BRPS) to tackle immigration abuse and illegal working, the Home Office has announced. Immigration Minister Damien Green said the number of foreign nationals issued with BRPS, which verify a person’s right to be in the country, will double to 400,000 a year. The Coalition for Marriage strongly opposes the redefinition of marriage on the basis that, while same-sex couples may choose to have a civil partnership, no one has the right to redefine marriage for the rest of us. Public opinion supports this view and the Coalition For Marriage calls on Christians and people everywhere to stimulate a public debate and mobilise popular opposition to prevent this unwelcome proposal becoming a reality. Don Horrocks, head of public affairs for the Evangelical Alliance, said: “We must be prepared for the long haul on this landmark issue. Many people are already speaking of the futility of opposition, but we are confidant that with strong, popular support we can win the campaign to protect marriage. Marriage is much more than a legal commitment but it is being steadily reduced and weakened by proposals such as this. If these proposals go through the consequences for society will be huge. The church has always been at the forefront of promoting the positive benefits of marriage between one man and one woman and together with society as a whole Christians everywhere should be ready to stand up for marriage.”

The government is considering watering down plans to strip child benefit from better-off families, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said yesterday. The news came as disgruntled Conservative backbenchers warned of a rebellion to block the plan. Meanwhile Labour urged the Coalition to drop changes to tax credits. From January 2013, couples with at least one parent earning more than £42,745 a year, the 40 percent tax rate threshold, were due to lose their payments, saving the Treasury around £1 billion.

The armed forces cannot be “immune” from further spending cuts as the Government pushes through the austerity programme, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond warned. Giving evidence to the Commons Defence Committee, he said the military faced further “very painful decisions” in the wake of Chancellor George Osborne’s autumn statement last week. Mr Hammond, who took over at the Ministry of Defence just seven weeks ago, following the resignation of Liam Fox, said the department had to stop operating “hand-to-mouth” and learn to live within its budget.

Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted Britain must make Europe “work for us” as he again ruled out holding an “in or out” referendum. During Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday, he was urged to listen to the calls of Conservative eurosceptics who want a vote on the UK’s relationship with the EU, but Mr Cameron, who also met European Council president Herman Van Rompuy yesterday insisted there was “no case” for a vote.

Information Commissioner Christopher Graham ruled the information was in the public interest. In a decision notice, he said: “The commissioner believes the content of the information in question would add to public knowledge and understanding about the reaction of various parties to that event in the early aftermath.”

The head of the British Army has put a question mark over the 2015 deadline for troops to leave Afghanistan. Prime Minister David Cameron has said the deadline is definite and that a “clear end point” is needed. But although General Sir Peter Wall stressed that the Army is “committed to deliver against that deadline” he added that “whether or not it turns out to be an absolute timeline or more conditions-based approach nearer the time, we shall find out”. He was interviewed for Afghanistan: War Without End? On BBC Two.

A campaign to get Religious Education included in the new school system has now gained more than 130,000 signatures, which may prompt a House of Commons debate. The coalition government’s proposals for the new Baccalaureate did not include RE but the RE:ACT campaign, organised by Premier Christian Media, is pushing to get it included. Prime Minister David Cameron had previously promised that petitions with more than 100,000 signatures would get a House of Commons debate.

The European Court of Human rights should avoid intervening in asylum and immigration cases, the Council of Europe said. The Strasbourg-based court should not act as an immigration appeals tribunal and should only intervene “in the most exceptional circumstances”, the council added. Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke said the court should “exercise restraint when interfering in asylum decisions.”

David Cameron robustly criticised his old university, Oxford, this week, by saying: “I saw figures the other day that showed only one black person went to Oxford last year. I think that is disgraceful.” The university was indignant, pointing out that their former student had misunderstood the figures. Twenty-two per cent of their students are from ethnic minority backgrounds. The Prime Minister’s Office was widely described as unrepentant. Whatever explanations Oxford might give, it is still not admitting what the Prime Minister would regard as a fair proportion of black UK students. A 10 Downing Street source told the BBC that the figures are “still terrible” and asked “what world is Oxford living in?”
