The Catholic Association for Racial Justice has called for the Ministry of Justice to take action against prison officers after it was revealed that they are proportionally more than twice as likely than prisoners to be reported for racism. The ministry of Justice figures show total alleged racist incidents in prisons rose from 11,380 to 14,191 between 2006 and 2008, an increase of 24 per cent. These allegations suggest one-in-seven staff members receive complaints about racist remarks, compared with one-in-16 prisoners accused for similar behaviour.

1 in 5 people believe politics would improve if more MPs read the Bible. A quarter of people also said they would trust an MP who is practising Christian more than one who is not. And almost three quarters of all people (71%) say that the expenses scandal has heightened their concerns over perceived integrity issues. This does, however, mean that nearly a quarter of people would still vote along party lines even if they believed that their MP had behaved with no personal integrity. The ComRes poll for Bible Society also found that: 72% of people say that the personal integrity of their MP matters more to them that the party to which they belong. Women (74%) are more likely than men (695) to favour personal integrity over party allegiance – according to a Bible Society poll. Over a third of people actually assumed that their MP was Christian.

A churchwarden of 15 years’ standing has resigned after he was found to be a member of the BNP. David North says the resignation was forced on him after the Diocese of Leicester said his views were “incompatible” with Christianity. He had been churchwarden at the Frisby on the Wreake village church of St Thomas of Canterbury on two separate occasions over the last 15 years and has been a member of the BNP for much of that time. “After many years of service to my church, I feel very let down to be asked to resign as churchwarden. I have done nothing illegal whatsoever. To be asked to resign because I’m a member of the BNP hurts. I have done nothing wrong.”

The European Union’s governing commission has warned Turkey that it must provide better protection for religious rights if it still hopes to join the EU by 2015. The report was issued as the European Court of Human Rights accepted two separate suits by Orthodox and Protestant churches that Turkey had violated their rights by denying them property ownership and legal registration. It said EU experts had welcomed the enactment of 2008 law on religious foundations, but remained concerned that religious teaching at Turkish schools continued to “favour Islam”, while non-Muslim communities faced difficulties building and maintaining places of worship.

in a relentless and cynical campaign to win votes. The bishop said Catholics needed to be “on the alert” following the BNP’s success in the European elections, and he warned that people should not underestimate the rise of the far-right party now it had a foothold in Europe with two MEP’s. The Bishop strongly rejected BNP leader Nick Griffin’s Question Time claim that British culture is “white and Christian”. Pointing to St Marie’s RC Cathedral in Sheffield, where 57 language communities are represented at the weekend Masses, he said he was “certain” that at least half of the congregation had not been born in England.

Winter fuel payments for pensioners are an “unsustainable” response to fuel poverty and should be reconsidered, a report said today. The Government’s £2.7 billion-a-year budget for winter fuel payments might be better spent on modernising the homes of pensioners who cannot afford to heat them properly, suggested local government spending watchdog the Audit Commission. The Commission pointed out that twelve per cent of people receiving the payments are in fuel poverty.

Officials have launched a trawl of the cases to try and find them and remove them from the country.
