New legislation will mean private hire drivers could face fines or lose their taxi licenses if they discriminate against the disabled. From this Thursday, taxi and private hire vehicles will be obliged by law to transport wheelchair users in their wheelchair, provide passengers in wheelchairs with appropriate assistance, and charge wheelchairs users the same as non-wheelchair users.

On Tuesday the Department for Health published abortion statistics for England and Wales for 2016...In 2016, 190,406 abortions were carried out in England and Wales - consistent with recent trends. There were 3,208 abortions under Ground E - i.e. on the basis that there was a risk the child would be born ‘seriously handicapped’. 9 of these abortions were for entirely survivable and correctable conditions such as cleft lip or cleft palate. 706 babies with Down’s syndrome were aborted - a slight increase on last year. 507 abortions on the basis of disability took place after 22 weeks gestation. 38% of all abortions were carried out for women who had one or more previous abortions.

The latest abortion statistics for Scotland show that more children are being aborted because they have a disability than ever before. The report, published by the Information Services Division, suggests that new prenatal screening techniques have led to more babies with Down's Syndrome being aborted. The statistics also show that abortions are significantly more common in deprived areas. In total, 12,063 children lost their lives to abortion in Scotland in 2016.

A new ComRes poll commissioned by Where Do They Stand, clearly shows that two thirds of Britons want the abortion time limit reduced from 24 weeks. The majority of the public (82%) would back change to the abortion legislation and require a waiting period of five days between a consultation with a doctor and an abortion taking place, so that a woman can carefully consider all options available to her and not feel pressured into an abortion.

An overwhelming majority of women want the abortion limit lowered, and 65 per cent of Britons say using taxpayer money on abortions abroad is wrong, according to a new poll. The findings also revealed that almost 80 per cent of people support a five day ‘consideration period’ before an abortion, as is the case in the Netherlands. Nearly nine in ten people believe sex-selective abortions should be explicitly illegal.

While MPs are overwhelmingly in support of the UK retaining its nuclear deterrent, opinion polls appear to suggest that the British public is more divided on the issue. A poll in January showed that a narrow majority – 51 per cent – of people agreed with the Governments proposal to fully renew Trident. Just under three out of 10 people supported Mr Corbyn’s plan to keep the submarines – thereby protecting jobs – but sending them on patrol without warheads, while a further 20 per cent opposed any Trident renewal.
