As many as 74 per cent of people would like to spend their final moments at home but the National Audit Office (NAO) End of Life Care report said more than half (58 per cent) of deaths take place in hospital. | |

| Children’s rights campaigners said Government ministers should be ashamed, after a bid to ban smacking failed in the House of Commons without a vote. Ministers were expected to face a backbench rebellion when the Children and Young Persons Bill was considered in the Commons yesterday evening. Procedural constraints meant the issue of smacking was not even debated on the floor of the Commons during the report stage of the Bill. | |

| The former head of the Metropolitan Police’s murder prevention unit today said the force’s use of stop and search to tackle knife crime could make gangs stronger. Laura Richards believes it could further alienate marginalised young men and drive them into gangs. | Bad behaviour by Britons abroad has seen arrests soar in Spain and France. Britons on foreign trips have also fallen foul of the authorise in Cyprus, the U.S. and the United Arab Emirates, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office statistics showed. Between April 2006 and March 2007, 2,032 Britons were arrested in Spain, a rise of a hid more than in 2005/06 and the highest number of any country visited. | |

| A study of 1,426 pupils aged 14 and 15 at state school in Southampton, commissioned by Hampshire police, carried out by Portsmouth University and published in July, found that nearly one in five of the pupils carried a weapon. Churches across London united in a Prayer for peace relay to tackle gun and knife crime and seek to bring peace to the capital. Prayer meetings were held every day in August in each of the 33 London boroughs. | |

| Britons have been accused of “a lack of national purpose” after research showed two in three adults will spend the August bank holiday watching television. A survey of 2,000 British adults found that 36 per cent were not interested in getting involved with community events or celebrating their heritage on public holidays. | Children are being incarcerated for too long at an immigration removal centre and becoming distressed and scared, prison inspectors said. The average length of time children are being held at the Yarl’s Wood centre in Bedfordshire has almost doubled from eight to 15 days in the last two years, an HM Inspectorate of Prison report found. | |

| The Prince of Wales has met with over 80 participants in this year’s Hope08 mission, at a Clarence House reception. The Prince praised the initiative, and those involved, for their ‘devotion and ability to motivate people’. He said that he was ‘fascinated to hear about how Hope08 started and what a marvellous response it has received all over this country.’ | |

| In the ComRes poll, designed to examine social attitudes and perceptions of the Bible, 27% of people questioned, wrongly believed that the statement: “ You must defend those that are helpless and have no hope. Be fair and give justice to the poor and homeless” (Proverbs 31:8) came from a speech by the singer, songwriter and activist Sir Bob Geldof. A further 20% thought it was from a report form UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. Only 13% of people correctly identified the statement as coming from the Bible. Despite this, the majority of people (52%) rightly stated that the Bible offered more teaching on poverty and justice, compared with hell (11%), adultery (10%) and homosexuality (2%). The findings of Theo’s research were released to coincide with the launch of a new Poverty and Justice Bible by Bible Society. | |

| England is set to become the most crowded country in Europe as its population grows by over a third in the next 50 years, according to projections. There are currently some 50 million people in England, but by 2056 this could hit 68 million – 1,349 for every square mile. The population density now is around 1,010. In London, this figure could rise from 12,377 to 13,910 over the next two decades. | |

| Forty-five per cent of marriages will end in divorce, according to a report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). If divorce and death rates remain unchanged from 2005, just 10 per cent of marriages will reach their 60th anniversary. | |
